The Last Ship
Posted by navy07 on Friday, August 15, 2014 3:07 PM
I don't know if any of you ship modelers have seen the new show "The Last Ship" on Sunday nights, but I became interested in building an Arleigh Burke Guided missile destroyer like the one on the show. I am building Hobby Boss's USS Lassen DDG82 in 1/700 scale (no room for 1/350) Do any of you have any ideas or thoughts on the subject. Has anyone build this kind of model? Thanks, Lenny

I have not done too many modern ships, but I did do a DML  Class Cruiser a few years ago,It was a straightfoward build, not as detailed as a WWII ship.

I would also recommend checking out the book which the movie is based on,a much different story and better in mine opinion

I have built a few:

They are a little shorter, but with a wider beam than Ticonderoga class ships:

USS Coontz and USS Monterrey:

There is a good bit of detail, there are fewer guns than ww2 ships but the main mast and foremast are more complex, lots of whip antenna, and electronics. The small white boxes on deck are for vertrep (vertical replenishment) where helicopters lower cargo nets full of supplies in to these boxes for replenishment  of dry cargo.  Warning circles need to be applied correctly and the landing pads have complex markings for pilot reference. The Hobby boss kit your building comes with photoetch parts IIRC. The mast can be a bit tricky and will need cyanoacrylate to attach to the plastic if your unfamiliar with photoetch.

Chasing the ultimate build.

Boy, your ships look great!  Did you make them waterline in a water scene?  Thanks for your reply.

I see Arleigh Burkes fairly often when they come in to Alamitos Bay nearby to moor at Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. Most recently I saw USS Spruance, DDG-111. The lines of those ships have really grown on me since I have been seeing them in person, especially the toned down hull markings. I may buy and build a 1/350 kit if I can find one for a good price.
