Reworking the much maligned whaleboats from the Aurora Wanderer
Posted by gene1 on Monday, July 23, 2018 6:40 PM

I took time off from my finish of the 1/96 Revell Spanish Galleon to rework the whaleboats from the Aurora Wanderer kit. I have wanted to do this even long before I finally got the kit last week. Here are the pictures with some notes of what i did.

Here is the cut down hul & the original.

here is the cut down right & the original hull left with one glued & clamped above.

This is the cut down clamped & glued with the kit seats cut out & replaced. I did some other scraping & sanding to change things.

The 4 boats finished & detailed . It did change things a lot & they do look a lot different. Any questions just ask.

The 2 upside down boats with the kit interior,  unfinished.

My nearly finished Galleon with it's new oak base. I used Minwax Gunstock stain.

Definitely improved.

They should have a rudder. Take a look at the one in the Nantucket Whaling museum, it's on the stern but folded up.

The Model Shipways New Bedford kit shows it extended. There isn't really a rudder post, it's attached up high with two pintles. I only make the suggestion because it wouldn't be hard to do and would improve the shape even more.

The irons would be placed in the boats only when they were lowered, but that could be the case on your model.

Nice work.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks GM, I appreciate that about the rudder. I knew I needed one, but will have to see it & draw it up. I was anxious to get back & finish my galleon so I can do the Wanderer.

I know nothing about a lot of ships & whaling, but I love to build them. The irons are the harpoons I guess, but these are ready to go. After the big Galleon I think the smaller Wanderer will be fun. Even tho, the Spanish Galleon was not a hard model & after I left those sails off the running rigging got way easier. I like plastic sails on a lot of smaller models, but the galleons were too big & not good at all. They hid all the rigging.

Steve,

Both Gene and I have had issues with Google Photo's vanishing from a post.  The pics are there initially and disappear several hours later.  In my case, just 1 picture which I have gone back 3 times to edit back in.  Maybe it has something to do with where we pull the link from.  My picture in question is from an Album with no name and is the only pic in ths Album.  My other Google photo's all seem to stay posted.  I wonder if anyone else has this issue with Google?

     Jim.

What is the difference between a pintle and a rudder post?  From my sailing days a gudgeon sat on a pintle.  Curious to learn.

Boats look great btw.  They had sails on whale boats?   An era I never studied.

Thanks,

John

I am sorry that this happens & I will run more pictures & try again. nino has been advising me & he is a super expert on computers.

I will run the rest if these come thru, but they have stayed on my computer, they always do & they stayed on my wifes computer that I ran as a test before I sent these last night.  Please let me know, & how do I delete these pictures so I can put them on again?

Well a rudder post can be several things, and these boats had neither. A part of the stern frame of the boat, usually a straight vertical, on which the rudder hinges attach. Or a vertical member inside the rudder itself, cantilevered down from the stern.

A rudder hinge is composed of both a pintle (has a pin) and gudgeon (has a hole for the pin) My own experience of small boats was that the pintles were mounted to the rudder and ther gudgeons were mounted to the transom. Made it easy to lean over the stern and put the rudder down in there.

Your first and third pics are missing   Others are there and look great.  Terrific work on these really small boats.  You made them into Mini-kits. Fantastic job!

AS a test for Google vs Postimage,  here's a photo. Let's see what happens...

Google Photo hosting is Not So Good.

The picture only shows for me when I am signed in to google.

Postimage:

Note:  The google photo link is hundreds of characters long. FSM doesn't seem to handle long Strings like this very well.  (see " It's back" thread.)

The Postimage.org link is really small:

I didn;t know if these Pictures made it.  am confused about what made it & not because I have it all on my computer.

Had to throw this in too. I have nearly all the rigging done & only have the anchors & flags to do. I should have final pics of the Galleon by the weekend. It took about the same time to build as the Kearsarge & Alabama, about 2 months. Do you like it better with furled sails & not the big plastic sails? The rigging sure shows better.

My son makes the oak bases for me & I paint them. The pedastal's are from ebay at about $8 or $9 aa pair shipped.

Thanks Bill.  I can't depend on Google Photo pic link then.  Seems like FSM does not like the realy long url image link.  Fortunately I use Flickr, Imgur, and Postimage for important stuff. I have updated Gene1 on these results.

Yea, that "deck plan" I posted would make a heck of a Whaler.  Bet the Crew of the Essex would have been a lot happier.

And Thanks.

Gene;

I thought I would give you a small chuckle .That's the way a lot of my neighbors talked when I was a boy in Buffalo .N.Y. Then moved to Arkansas and learned to speak English !

When I was in Business I actually had to take a Speech and Diction class because my Secretary and my Wife said no one outside Little Rock would understand me .

I always wondered why fellow students in college looked at me funny ! Imagine a heavy accent like I posted , modified with a Southern Drawl ! HELP ! !

Thanks Doc, My wife was from Atlanta & I had to fly up to Chicago for back surgery in 1969 & my wife about starved up ther because she couldn't understand them & they didn't know what she was saying. She finally came into the Hospital to eat & it was super. I had the penthouse hospital room for $25 a day. Try that now.

I jus finished the big Revell Galleon yesterday & have pictures to post & will try a few, let me know if they come thru & I will post more. Now I am ready to start the Wanderer whaleship. I jus lost the last post so I will post pictures on the next post.  Whoops, I put them on the wrong site.

No luck on these pictures . However, your other Thread on the Galleon worked fine.

Try an  EDIT on your existing post above and re-try the Google Link again.

Quiet a few folks here use Postimage, among many others, and maybe they can ween you off of Google.  Google photos seems to be too hit-or-miss these days.

Jim,  I really pay attention to everything you say, especially on computers, but nuclear fission seems simple compared to computers. I do get lost easy. I didn't even get these pictures on the right site & they didn't make it here or am I reding wrong?

Gene,

Most of the pictures you've attempted to post on this thread are not visible to me.

I keep telling folks that I really have enjoyed Flickr as my image hosting site since I quit Photobucket. I realize it's not quite as easy as uploading directly from one's computer, but we, as modelers, should automatically have some reserve of patience Wink.

I am usually helped by visual images when I'm trying to learn how to do something on a computer so I wrote a long-winded explanation in the Testing Forum to try to help someone out a while back on how to post images on this site from Flickr. There are a couple of methods. I've tried to explain both of them in that little tutorial using screenshots. If you like I'll try to find it for you and post the link.

OK, I've found it again. Here's the link:

Mike,  I appreciate your trying to help me on pictures, but I am a dunce when it comes to computers. I will try to look up your post. I tryed a right click to move & & then didn't know what to do. Nino has helped me a lot with the computer.

I am 87, so when i grow up maybe I will learn how. I started with Picasa & that moved to Google photos & now I have about got that mastered, about. I really like the editing on Google & they work fine most everywhere except now I am having problems with FSM. I love this site too. Thanks again.

For those members who follow Gene Fosters (gene1) activity on this forum, Gene's family has suffered a loss.  I was asked to provide some details to those who faithfully follow his most recent Posts.

On Thursday Morning this week, Gene Foster's oldest Son, Bill, died in a Propane tank explosion at his home in North Carolina just 2 miles from Gene's House. The Home was completely destroyed. Gene's Family is flying in today.  At this time no Formal Public Funeral is planned.
I have been talking with Gene this past week, discussing my own modeling activities and receiving help on Painting tips and a dozen other things.  These discussions lead to Gene's request that I pass on details of this tragedy.

Anyone needing Gene's address and email, please PM me.
Thanks.
