Revell 1/485 Yorktown CV5 build
Posted by gene1 on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 5:13 PM

Don Staufer got me interested in aircraft carriers, & I have never built one in the thousands of  models I have built. Now I have the 3 Midway carriers in 1/700 & the Revell 1/485 Yorktown that nino,Jim, gave me. Also I have a i/485 Hornet & will get the CV6 Enterprise in 1/485/ I love that scale around 1/500. That are nice to work with.

I had a friend in school who joined the navy at 16 right after Pearl Harbor &  was on the Yorktown at Midway. He made it ok thru the war. Kids could swim where I grew up.

Here is my Yorktowm. It starts with the wood I put in the hull to screw it down with. & I used brass for my cross spars on the plastic masts & prop shafts.

This is just setting together to check fit of the deck. That was the hardest part of a simple build glueing it togeteher. I did use 1/350 PE railings & they looked in scale.

Everything just setting together , no gglue on the deck yet. I did paint every thing before I glued the deck on.

These I just took & it is nearly finished  in about 2 weeks. I still have the lifeboats & outer hull stairs to do & some more flags & details.

Thats all for now, but it was another break from the rigging on the Victory. I will do more of these, I even got the new Academy 1/600 Enterprise coming.

Gene1,

She looks great!  Nice paint work on both the ship and aircraft. I am digging the base you made for it, really nice.

I really like that model, Gene. Well done all around. The kit itself is kind of a turkey; good work.

Gene,

I sent some comments by email.  Love what you've done with this old model.

It's a beautiful Out-Of-The-Box success. ( I know you added a few PE railings- doesn't count agaist OOB status IMHO.

Looks really good for an old 1968 mold.  I bet you are going to want to do another Carrier soon.

          Jim

P.S. The higher quality photos look GREAT!

Thank you all for the super replies, & thanks to Don who got me intersed ar first in carriers & to nino for giving me the kit. He is sort of like Santa Clause.

I did it out of box except for some old 1/35 PE railing.  Iused all mixed Tamiya paint, but got off on the Navy Blue. I will do either the 1/485 Revell Hornet or the Trumpeter 1/700 Yorktown. I want to see if my fingers work on a 1/700 model.

Beautiful finish, Gene!  You've got an attractive model there, from your build to the base.  It's great to see this classic finished with the care you've given her.

Modelcrazy did a 1/700 Hornet/Doolittle Raid about a year ago for a GB, but don't remember exactly which one it was.  Might take a look around for that one.  Came out great.

Marcus, I get 1"x4" Oak at lowes & cut it to 16"or 24" & have my son in law use the router on it for me. I don't have a router & it would be hard for me to hold it now annyway.  I like Min Wax Gunstock stain best & use spray can lacquer to put 4 coats for a finish. I use lacquer sanding sealer when I can get it. I also use 1x6 x24" for a big model like the 1/100 Victory.

Thank you, GM & Steve. It was a real fun build with some leftover 1/350PE.

FYI Gene- One of the etchers like Gold Medal makes a generic 1/540 USN set for the Midway/ Essex carrier kits. Probably work on the Yorktowns too.

Jim, thanks for all the great comments. You have been a great help to me in everything I do in models.

GM, Bill, Thanks for the PE tips. I wonder how much difference there is in the PE I used on the Yorktown. it seemed to fit & I have enough to do another one or 2 1/485 carriers.

Should the Hornet have those, side keels or what ever they are> I will take them off if needed.

I am going to start the 1/600 Academy Enterprise now. We had a huge 50th anniversary surprise dinner last night. 25 of all our kids were there We only had 6, but they had attachments..What a super bunch & loads of fun too. I told them to start planning our 51th right away.

Here are a few final pictures of the Yorktown. I was out of any oter hull stairs so I used the kit stairs after I cut off the railing section & used PE rail I had.  I got the boats on & put some signal flags up. My brother did that during WW2.
