1/350 scale railings
Posted by retdfeuerwehr on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 6:07 PM

Does anyone know of a manufacturer who produces 1/350 railing that simulates wire, instead of a solid bar....basically, what I'm looking for is some railing that "droops" - chain simulation might work, but I'd rather use something I can convert. This us for an LST I served aboard, and the main deck safety stanchions and wires were taken down during helo landing ops. Any help will be most appreciated. Thx

Rob,

Stancions and wire in 1/350 is pretty much impossible to find. I went through all my PE list in that scale and found nothing even in my Pontos sets!

Your best bet may be BlueJacket for the stanchions and using copper wire from electrical wires like I did on my Elco PT Boat. I’m looking to replace the stanchions, etc... on my 1/72 Schnellboot but it’s a whole lot easier at that scale.

I’ll look some more for 1/350 stanchions and let you know if I find anything.

Helo ops sound good.

Every now and then I see a set that has a part or too, but not a regular thing. You could try dragging your finger down a straight bar set.

 Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I want to say that I've seen some.  I just can't place a brand or where.   I want to say Aber or Lion Roar.   They weren't marked as USN,  rather Kreigsmarine or IJN

Hi;

    What I do is buy the 1/350 Stanchions then use very fine braided wire to string them. The wire can be found in salvaged electronics .

I have converted the bar type.  I cut the middle and bottom bars from a 2-bar railing.  Then I carefully put a slight U-shape in the remaining bar.  It is time consuming, but it worked.  In that scale one cannot really tell the texture, so it did look like stanchions and cable.

You could try using some styrene rod for the stanchion and drill small holes using a pinvise and wire drill bit.  Mount the stanchions, then string the wire (28 or 30 gauge) and get the appropriate sag by gently pushing with your finger as you go.  Could also use some fly-tying thread dipped in watered down Elmers to simulate the wire.  Probably what I would do.
