I'm wondering what the large blackish rectangular panels on the (superstructure) side of destroyers are.....they look like large windows. There are about 30 of them on the ship. My guess is they have something to do with enemy radar deflection (stealth tech). My son is on the USS Cole and I'm building a model of the ship. I've gotten very curious about his life on board and where he lives.
I wasn't in the Navy and most of what I see and hear is new to me. I try not to ask him too much because I don't want to get him into trouble...."lose lips, sink ships" ....as it were.
Thanks...
This is a subfixer or Ed Grune question, above my paygrade.

30 large black "windows" or panels on the superstructure of destroyers eliminates the SPY-1 antennas on Burkes (they're gray and only four of them) . Unless he's asking about the bridge windows themselves
,
Otherwise, I need a picture.
EdGrune.....
On the photo you posted..I'm inquiring about be the several panels below the black "smokestacks".
In the photo you posted, the panels are a tan/light grey in color (on recent photos of the Cole...they are black in color).
FYI....I'm not refering to the large gray panels below the bridge windows or the bridge windows themselves. The panels I'm asking about are mainly on the rear superstructure
These? They're air intake grills supplying air to the engines and to help moderate the heat of the exhaust. Nothing at all to do with anti-weapon sensors.
YES...excellent! That would make sense.
Thanks for your help!!!

Ventilation grid looks different color at different angle. They are definitely NOT painted "blackish"
What is the proper treatment of these grids in 1:350 model? Paint them upper deck color and give them a black wash?
That is how I would approach them, with a blackish wash after being painted.

Yup, paint superstructure color, add black wash, and then dry brush if necessary to just leave shadows. As Ed pointed out, the color depends on the angle of the camera to the ship, like household blinds.
Very good info..........I like knowing what I'm dealing with.
