Gold Medal Models 1:720 scale Super Carrier PE set

GMM does not accept credit card at their Washington state website. They also have a $200 minimum limit on Paypal order. Yes, $200, not a typo. $24 plus $2.50 shipping.

I found the PE at Pacific Front Model too, but they want $9 shipping.

Any more convenient place to order without the $9 shipping?

Pacific Front Hobbies offers several choices for shipping. I just ordered the Revell 1/72 Type VII U-Boat from them. The USPS wanted over $20.00 for shipping; I chose the UPS at $8.00.  Look at their alternatives.

Bill, thank you for the reminder. The $8.95 shipping is for UPS, the USPS Priority Mail is slightly cheaper at $5.35. Still not sure about that for a $24 PE, particularly GMM offers $2.50 shipping for the same set. I just don't like the fact that GMM will not take paypal or credit card at their site.

A $8 shipping for a $113 huge kit is not bad at all.

I perfer to get my model supplies from the LHS whenever I can. The Italeri Super Carrier kit was $26 plus tax, no shipping but gas to drive there. But they do not carry or order GMM AM parts.

Mike, the Floating Dry Dock website shows flat rate shipping of $5.25 for items $10-30. The GMM PE set is priced at $24.

It just boils down to the fact that we are paying for the convenience of having these things readily available. Let's face it, very few hobby shops carry GMM or any other after-market product. And, you have to use snail mail to order direct from GMM. That is fine if you don't mind waiting, especially if they are out of the set you want.  Online shops such as the ones we are discussing not only tell you directly if they have the item, but will ship them out next day via any shipping option you choose. I often don't mind paying the fees to use paypal; it means I don't have to dig deeper in debt if I had to use a credit card.  It's all about convenience.

I don't fault Loren Perry at GMM at all for not accepting PayPal or credit cards - he is a one man shop, does it all, and is trying to make at least part of his living by doing so. Every little thing he can do to cut costs means, down the road, more and better PE sets for us, the customers.

PayPal is one notch below extortion for the way they treat businesses, and credit card companies aren't much better. It's a convenience for us, sure, but it cuts into what little profit these mom-and-pop businesses make on the items that they sell to an extremely limited market.

Loren makes great stuff and I have absolutely no problem mailing him a check and waiting for the items to arrive.

I sincerely apologize . . . I meant no criticism of Loren Perry or GMM! I believe that GMM photoetch products are wonderful.  And, I do understand the problems inherent in businesses using Paypal and credit cards. All that i said was that it is up to each modeler to decide when placing orders; use regular mail and mail a check, or use an online shop for faster service.

Dont forget good ol' USPS money orders too. The extra 50¢ is worth it to me for the speedy turn around time as compared to writing a check. Most folks take a USPS money order, as it is not out of their way to cash it, since they are inevitably at the post office anyways.Big Smile
