Mars Class Supply Ship AFS-1
Posted by Gyred on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 8:55 PM
Hey all, I am looking to build a Mars Class Supply ship much like the one my father served on in Vietnam. He specifically served on the USS Niagara Falls AFS-3, but any in that class will do. Any ideas on where to find a kit?

I'm building the San Jose AFS-7 using the Iron ShipWrights 1/350 waterline kit. I'll be posting next week.

That is the only Mars class that I know of in any scale.

The Falls was my home in the late '70s so it was hard to watch the footage of her being sunk as a Rimpac target in July 2012.

AFS = Attack Food Ship. Wink

In case there are those who failed to see the [sarcasm] pennant . . .

A = Auxiliary (e.g. non-combatant) vessel

F = reFrigerated cargo (also known as "Reefer")

S = Stores e.g. expendable supplies that are not fuel or ammunition

All the AFS are gone now. The Lewis and Clark class in the auxiliary force have taken their place. No models of them yet. Sad

raider-hall - do you have any photos or data on the UH-46's that were operating from Mars or the Falls duriing Vietnam? What squadrons were that? I would like to build one of those helos in 1/72 someday. The Ship looks very nice, those railings are especially impressive. Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

raider-hall, GMorrison - thanks a lot for your help. I found one interesting video on Youtube today, most of them show SH-60's unfortunately. GMorrison - was the White Plains serving in Vietnam? Have a nice day
