Revell Vasa Ship Kit
Posted by Alpha 43 on Thursday, January 15, 2015 11:00 AM

I picked up this kit at a hobby shop liquidation sale, looked good on the box art. I see that this kit has been discontinued and I was wondering if anyone built this model and if there are a lot of problems with the parts fits and other pitfalls to watch for. Thanks for the help.

I suppose it depends upon the year the kit was produced.

The creator of this post on The Ship Model Forum is happy with the kit:

You might start with this thread from 3 years ago:

Ask David through a PM whatever questions you might have regarding this kit. I imagine he'll be happy to answer you to the best of his knowledge.

a lot of people run this kit down., I found it to be a most enjoyable experience., It also depends on how rabid you are about the history side of things., for me it was my first big ship and I had a ball .,I probably would do things different now.,but such is life

Earl, I didn't find any trouble with the kit.  It's a well-molded, good-fitting kit.  It's not super-detailed, in terms of construction (the guns are one-piece barrels that glue into molded carriages on the lower deck, but they're hidden inside anyway)...

I had a blast building it!

Actually, it's surprising to me that it's discontinued...it's only a few years old.

If you have any specific questions for the build, feel free to ask!

I also have had no problem with mine. I though that it fit together very well. My only issue with the kit is that it doesn't provide complete gun decks and complete cannons, and was somewhat reminiscent of some of the Lindberg and Pyro kits in that regard. Otherwise, it was highly detailed and was an enjoyable model to build. (Yes, I did build the gun decks and provided replacement cannons without difficulty.)

Thanks Bill,

Where did you find the replacement cannons? I'm kind of torn between building the Arizona 1:350 scale or the Vasa or ETC., ETC. I only got back into this hobby about a year and a half ago after retirement, but I am buying a lot of good models which I see in the magazines. I only hope that I get the opportunity to build them all. So far, I have built the Academy Titanic  and I am now finishing an M109, 155 mm howitzer.

Thanks again Bill, and have a great day.

Earl,

I commandeered them from a spare Heller Le Glorieux. The scale is close enough. I also scratch built the different gun decks for greater depth to the model.

Hi Guys! I have the Revell Vasa on the go at present. Was unaware that it has been discontinued as it was a 2012 release. Sales must have peaked some time ago I guess. The kit is generally more accurate than the old Airfix one. However, the rendition of the carved figures is much better on the old Airfix kit. The Revell kit's carvings were less well defined. Basically, as the scale of the two kits is close (Revell 1/150th and Airfix 1/144th) I have been doing a bit of kit bashing using the best of both. Look in the Forum on the IPMSUK under Nautical to find the Vasa thread.

Bugatti Fan,

I'm not great at finding things on the 'net that are not obviously linked. The only thread I could find was this one:

http://ipmsuk.proboards.com/thread/808/airfix-wasa

It's a thread on the Airfix kit. Is this the one to which you refer - or are you referring to a different thread? If so, would you be kind enough to provide a link?

Actually, after having read a bit more of the above linked thread, it does seem to be the one to which you referred.

The Airfix kit is also an accurate model and a nice kit. The only issue I have with it also involves the way that the gun deck cannons are depicted. They are dummy barrels that the builder simply cements into recessed but solid gun ports.  Otherwise, the Wasa Museum once called the Airfix kit "The most accurate model of the Wasa on the market."  That was before the Revell release, which was based on more recent research.
