How do you paint ship deck?
Posted by garzonh on Thursday, January 12, 2017 8:52 AM

Hi

Im building my first ship, the Mighty Mo in 1/535, a very old Revell model from the 50's which has been a nightmare in terms of fitting, flash, etc.

However, Im stuck at painting the ship deck.

How do you paint it?...do you first paint all the structures in gray, then paint the deck.

I would like to use airbrush with different tones of browns and masking but that would ruin all the structures paint.

So, do I actually have to mask all structures? the deck has tons of intricate details, so masking everything is impossible.

IM thinking that I should paint the structures, then use a brush with thinned paint and paint the deck..

I agree that masking all the small detail molded into most kit decks is quite difficult.  I usually airbrush the main color, without masking the fine detail.  I then paint the small detail with a regular brush.  Especially with flat paint brush marks are not that noticable on such small detail.

A bigger problem to me is the seam between the deck and the hull. If that seam is too noticible, I will fill it with putty, repaint the hull, mask the hull, airbrush the deck, and then do the small details by hand.
