Carrier Aircraft
Posted by Tanker - Builder on Saturday, January 14, 2017 9:44 AM

Hi Everyone .

This is a request more than anything else . As some know , I obtained a 1/400 model of the French Carrier " Charles De-Gaulle ". It has turned almost to a job , not a pleasure in some ways , But I will persevere .

The question is this . Is there any way I can obtain landing gears for the aircraft ? The molded on stumps while doing their job , make the Super Etendards and the others look like toys . Not Models !

They seem to be fairly well executed . But , Let's face it , I know nothing of modern Franch aircraft anyway . I just want this non-American Bird Farm to look great !  T.B.

I did n't look real hard, but didn't find anything related.

A thought...cut off the stubs...replace with a stretched sprue "gear", and slice the "wheels" off some round stock(or stretched sprue), glue em to the stretched sprue "gear"...bing, bang, boom! You could use some pop can aluminum for the gear doors as well.

As with most things that are visual representations, if you can focus on one distinctive detail, the viewer will get tricked into buying the rest.

The SuE has a very tall nose gear, a lot like the A4, and probably for the same reasons, that gives it a nose up attitude.

in addition the tire is castered like a lot of Dassault aircraft.

if you can get that going, it'll look right.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Hello!

You could start with a piece of thin wire with a tiny ball of white glue on the end for the wheel. It's no problem finding 0.2mm wire, copper is easy to work with and it you want it extra tough, get some broken guitar string - it's for free and it's steel. Now if you dip the very end in white glue, you get a nice, tiny ball on the end. I use this method a lot for shifting lever knobs. Alternatively you can do what Fermis already wrote - stretch some sprue and "salami-slice" it - lots of tiny wheels!

Good luck with your aircraft and your carrier, have a nice day

Paweł

My 1/700 Hasegawa ESSEX had those little peg leg landing gear too. I punched small disks out of PE fret material with my Micro punch from Micro Mark. Sliced a thin slit in the Peg legs and glued the disks in the slit. Didn't look too bad in 1/700 scale.

Completed - 1/525 Round Two Lindberg repop of T2A tanker done as USS MATTAPONI, USS ESSEX 1/700 Hasegawa Dec 1942, USS Yorktown 1/700 Trumpeter 1943. In The Yards - USS ESSEX 1/700 Hasegawa 1945, USS ESSEX 1/700 Dragon 1944, USS ESSEX 1/700 Trumpeter 1945, USS ESSEX 1/540 Revell (vintage) 1962, USS ESSEX 1/350 Trumpeter 1942, USS ESSEX LHD-2 as commissioned, converted from USS Wasp kit Gallery Models. Plus 35 other plastic and wood ship kits.

Aha!

The problem here is just that .They are not the little " Peg Legs " . If you look at some toy aircraft that are seen on some model train layouts it looks like a 2x12 turned sideways for landing gear .

Revell did some with the little " Peg Legs " These could be thinned for gear and a salami slice glued to one side of the bottom for a wheel . Not hard .These are big slabs hanging from the a/c bottoms .

I think I'll use Both " Gs" idea and Pawel's  Ideas .This means a little more work but they will then look Kick Butt ! Aluminum scrap for gear doors ? Why not ?  T.B.   Oh , Thanks Guys ! !

Just a thought but if you take that "...tiny ball of white glue on the end for the wheel" and squeeze it a bit it might look more like a Tire.  Using small needle nose pliers that have a bit of Texture on the surface might give you some extra detail to the Aircrafts tire too.I had to wait for the glue to set a bit. I also wet the pliers.  I only needed a very small amount of white glue.

Jim.
