There are supplies of blackannealed steel wire out there which can make for spiffy foot ropes in that they will sag and droop to need.

This is available in spools down to 22 gauge (0.711BWG)

That is a great idea!When I did my foot ropes, I had to hang small binder clips and apply super glue so that they would hang down correctly .

I figured out that even though the parts list says "cloth covered wire," the coth covered wires are referred to as "tan wire" in the plans and is used to hold the sail shape.

While not the Cutty Sark, I built a few other Scientific kits.  I seem to remember that the cloth covered wires were used for the footropes under the yards.  If you use regular threads it is a bit hard to keep them hanging in the right shape, and the wire makes them stiff when you form them.

My kit did not have the cloth covered wires but it builds into a nice ship!    

I have #174, but not #163. Mine's the small one.

There's one piece of plain wire. It's identified as used for the davits and the windlass rocker arms.

My favorite part actually is the drawing, by the late great Walter Musciano.
