Searching in vane
Posted by MacGyver on Thursday, February 14, 2019 12:17 PM

Hello I am new here, and I just wanted to jump right into it. I was sationed on board the USS Reid FFG-30 back in 90-92. I recently bought the Academy 1/350 model of a perry class FFG-7. I have been trying to find a decal set so I can make the Perry into the Reid. I have searched the internet for days and have no success. I have found every Perry Class frigate the navy had, but havnt found the Reid. Anyone with any leads would be greatly appreciated.

How much do you think you need?

The decals that come with the Academy pretty much cover the basic deck and helo pad area.   You will need a 30 in 1/350 scale and those are available.  You also need REID for the stern. Sometimes you can make that up from copyright letters and notes on a decal sheet.

For a basic set with hull #'s try this:

BUT, for a full set designed for the Perry (long hull) class:

You may not find a Decal for the Stern as "Reid".  You might have to locate individual letters to make that up. The Hawk Graphics decal is the best.  It has most ships names and individual letters too.

There are plenty more styles on eBay and that could be a better option.

Iron Shipwright has a decal set which used to accompany their resin & brass short-hull Perry kit

Their kit was withdrawn after the release of more economical injected kits.   The decal is available separately.  Check the Accesories page at the ISW website

To the decal sets offered by Hawk Graphics (above).   I spoke with Darren Scannell of Hawk last year.   He said that life has gotten in the way of the resin ship and decal business.  He has been forced to pause his operations until things shake out

I often do ship names using rub down letters. Woodland Scenics make some.

Thank you for your service and welcome aboard.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

For ship names, I will often make my own decal. I create the name on my computer, then print on plain paper to check the size and spacing. When that is good, a friend uses his laser printer to print it on clear decal paper. I make 3-4 names, so I have a few spares in case I mess it up. -Bill

Ed, Thanks for the update on Hawk Graphics. I realized too late that USS Reid was a short hull Perry and the Hawk set would not have the name listed..

That ISW set looks like the way to go then. The Helo pad decal looks perfect and the set even has REID in it.

Thank you so much. I just ordered the set and I hate to say this but I am so excited to start this build now. It is not every day that you get to have a 3D piece of your life. Thank you again.
