Glueing and Priming
Posted by Allessio77 on Sunday, April 28, 2019 6:15 PM

I'm building my first 2 ships...both USN Fletcher Class Destroyers. (DD445 and DD537)

On the 1st one, I primed (and often painted) my parts before glueing. I had several problems with this technique, so on the 2nd ship  I am glueing and removing seams before priming and painting.

Now, it looks to me that I have created a huge masking situation that I avoided on my first ship! Do I have to brush paint the entire topside? I am having nightmares about protecting the entire superstructure when I paint the deck.

How do you veteran shipbuilds approach this issue?

You need to plan ahead and think it out.You have to build and paint in assemblies. There are diffrent approaches of course,I would spray my deck, hand paint the small fittings that are molded to the deck.Assemble the various superstructures and paint them, then carefully glue them to the deck

What you should do is examine the build log posts in this ship forum and see how the builders approach diffrent ships. Each has its own nuances and each builder pursues a different plan.

I pretty much do it the same way.  I finish all hull painting before adding deck, paint the deck seperately, paint superstructure seperately.  I also paint any PE before installing it.
