Thank you for the encouraging words, everyone. I began working on the Bounty this week; once I get a few steps in I'll make a post.

Welcome to the forums, Aaron, and great job on the Constitution! One of my favorite, classic, ship models. Good luck on the Bounty, I'm sure it will look great!

Shipwreck, You are never too old to buld models unless you are dead. I am pushing 90 in 1&1/2 years & still build all the time. Shaky hands & more.

Aaron, I have over 20 builds on this Fine Scale site & the Victory is the newest. Also for shroud rigging look at my Imai Mayflower & Airfix 1/72 Golden Hind as I rigged those shrouds & a lot more with Airfix's rigging tool. Heller has one too but I like Airfix's best. I used Heller's big rigging tool for the 1/100 Victory & they worked real good. I am too old to tie knots.

There are really some super modelers on this site, just keep looking.

Thank you GMorrison. I'm looking forward to the Bounty- there is no shortage of excellent examples here in the forums.

Welcome!

A fine built model. The Bounty is good one too, as is the Charles W. Morgan.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thank you for the welcome. Going to see the Constitution in Boston is a bucket-list item for me, and I hope to one day tackle the 1/96 version. One step at a time!

Aaron, first welcome to the forum. You did a fine job on your Connie. Thanks for sharing. The USS Constitution is one of my favorites. I am trying to build one before I get too old to build anything! I find the forum encouraging because of the fine models the members build; and discouraging because there is so much to learn. Just stay on the learning curve and enjoy building.

Thank you for the kind words. I had alot of fun with it. My next project is going to be the Revell Bounty. I've looked at a few examples here on the forums and I'm really excited to start experimenting; in particular I want to try and copper the bottom with copper tape, and add some weathering and make my own shrouds and ratlines. At first I was going to be more conservative, but why not dive in right? I have a spare Constitution hull I'll probably practice on first with the coppering.

Do you have any pictures up of your Victory? I'd love to see it.

It was great to get this first build done. It was an intimidating hobby to jump into, but I've found that the challenge has become the fun part.

A real nice job on the Connie Aaron. Keep it up, it has always been fun & you are right, this is the nicest, most helpful bunch of model builders you will find. I have been building models since before WW2 & still enjoy it as much as ever. I am building the big 1/100 HMS Victory right now.  What are you going to build next?                     Gene

First Build: USS Constitution 1/196

Edit: Looks like Flickr is finally back up, so I can finally post a photo; bad timing to start a post:

Hello everyone,

I recently finished my first ship, the USS Constitution 1/196 (a common one, I know). The ship has always fascinated me, and the model is one I've wanted to finish for a few years now. After a few failed attempts, I'm happy to say I finally worked my way through it, and wanted to share it with you all as a means to introduce myself and get some feedback. Here's a link to some pictures, although the site seems to be down at the moment; I was having trouble getting pictures to post right on here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/158098306@N08/albums/72157708576117585/with/46996163835/

As you can see, I didn't stray too terribly far from the instructions, although I did take inspiration from a few build logs I found to add some additional rigging, and I bought some different gauged thread from Model Shipways to vary the rigging a bit. Even those few customizations added to the finished product I think; overall I'm pretty happy with it as my freshman attempt. My only real regret is that while rigging I unfortunately rubbed the paint at a few points turning the ship so much; in particular the stern, which I took hours to do, was a bit messed up. Lesson learned.

Mostly I just wanted to say hello; the level of skill and knowledge on this forum is far beyond what I could hope to achieve, but it seems like a very nice community. I have the HMS Bounty 1:110 arriving tomorrow, so maybe I'll try a real build log. I'm hoping to take it a bit further on this one and try some weathering on the sails and a wash for the deck, as well as make my own shrouds and ratlines.

Aaron
