You can easily make clone by by burnishing aluminum foil down on it.

Thats a delicate thing as any errant finger will ruin it, but it paints well.

 

Could you expand on this technique?  That was my concern is making something that small that any deviation will be noticeable.  But making a 1/2" by 1/2" 'master' then making copies/clones, if that is what you are meaning, might be doable.

I remember those mats.  My old front door welcome mat was made that way IIRC, a half inch (+/-) thick woven of half inch strips  

0.5 / 24 = 0.020.  

Use some 20 thousand Evergreen plastic and cut your mats to size  Paint dark gray.  Dry brush one direction with a coarse brush in light gray.  Go back and brush cross wise in black.  

Trying to replicate the woven mats would likely be very time consuming with marginal results. 

Cant think of a suitable PE application.
