Good day Steve,

Your Mayflower looks nice! Good painting jobs!:)))

Dave said very right about bowsprit ...well to the middle of 17th century, in english tradition, it was placed off the center line, on stb side as a rule regarding to the fore mast... but end/tip of bowsprit should aligns with the ship central line...

You d better  made this spar from some wooden stick( paint brush handle proper size for example ,is very good for such purpose) and need to fix it as much solid/ relaible as possible at place...

because ,when you start rigging Fmast, there will be considerable tension from the stays on bowsprit , and bowsprit ,if it is not fixed properly and left made from plastic...easily could be curved upward, will not looks nice...gammoning will not help too much in this case, but bobstays doesn't exist in this time...

I 've made it from wood, the only one wooden element in my galeon...mast and spars I left plastic,in my kit, plastic was very hard, and was good to resist rigging tensions...but in your kit,it looks loke kind of soft plastic...how good it will be for masts and spars?

may be there is sence to replace top masts for wooden sticks? on the foto ,they looks too fragile...could be very difficult to rigg them...?

Wish You All the best! :)))

I have two Revell kits I want to do next, the HMS Endeavor and the Mayflower.  I had been intending to do the Endeavor first, but because of this thread I am thinking of doing the Mayflower first- just can't decide for sure.

Hey Steve-

I just cuaght this thread.

First, Yikes! Sorry about your thumb, hoping it heals well.

I like your work so far on the Revell Mayflower...I have the Imai Mayflower in the stash, not sure when I'll build it, but it seems similar to yours, so I'm taking notes.

Also, the question of the wonky bowsprit...I'm glad you were able to straighten it out, because it was indeed at the wrong angle.  But I thought I could add to the mystery, just for anyone who may come across a similar ?? on a build:

I havenoticed a few ship kits where the bulkhead entry hole for the bowsprit was not centered.  I think the reason for this is because a *real* bowsprit leads far down into the hull, and would intersect with the base of the foremast.  They must have installed the bowsprit off-center so it could lead further in without getting in the way.  Though, in my experience, they still point straight out of the front of the bow.

Here's a pic of the Spanish Galleon I'm working on now, I dry-fitted the bowsprit just to illustrate the point.

You can see it's off-center but still leads straight out of the front.  The gammoning will help keep it faired.

I know you're already past the obstacle this caused, but again, I thought it could help for future understanding.

Yes

Great work!

Dave

Ah, that makes sense.  I have that Mayflower kit so will be following this thread closely.  Amazing how many photos I found on Google images of the reproduction.

Yeah,  it is much harder to find photos of the original....! Big Smile

But there are some paintings and drawings.  What I have seen is not too different than the repro.

Hey man, it happens. Don’t feel stupid... chopping food is an easy way to lose a digit. A person has to be extra careful and then sometimes that is not enough. Crazy things happen.

I am really sorry to hear that happened to you, that REALLY sucks!

I can't even get stitches in it , as I've just got a flat top of the thumb , and sore , feel so stupid too . some mothers do have em steve .

Steve,

I haven't built this model since i was kid and no way was it this far off. Looking at an earlier pic of when you snapped off that piece, i see the hole in the main deck for the base to fit in clearly off centered. I would remove it, rework the opening in the deck so its inline/ centered with the fore mast and reinstall the bowsprit.

thank's guys , micheal , what I meant was , the bowspit is obviously designed to be off centre, do you know the reason why ? it look's weird .your knowledge of ships is far greater than mine . I did like you asked and took a shot from overhead .

Looks great! Getting the right 'wood' color is something I've been trying to figure out as I get ready to start the hull for my own project; yours turned out really well. The stain you mentioned; do you mean just regular wood stain? Looking forward to the next update.

Well the obvious reason would be the base of the bowsprit is not cenetred, but I'm sure it is, just can't tell from this shot and looks to be fairly straight too, also it looks like the starboard half of the hull is a little higher, again probably because of the angle of the pic. Maybe an overhead shot to see how true the bow is? Looking fanstastic thus far Steve!!

It's a good idea to put the model on a temporary build base. I make cheap ones up that give me the ability to lay the model on it's side.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Steve, forgive me for laughing but I broke the bowsprit twice. I eventually left it broke until I was done manhandling the hull.

Nice fix sir, and looking good!

and a quick update shot

Hey Steve-  with your closeup shots I can see the panel line/grain work. It looks good.

I hear you about the shiny. I had a heck of a time showing the work as it looks. My camera loved to shift colors, erase detail, and produce glare that was not visible to your eye. It's frustrating.

I like what I see, my friend. Looking good! Yes

I remember now that you have reminded me of your salt method , with wood stain . I couldn't use that because I had all those colours on the  sides . so I did a couple of layers , gloss coat , layer of DK brown tamiya panel liner . with a final layer of humbrol flat clear . I am seeing the individual panels on the hull now . not as oakish as yours , pity , but with that aged look , getting there . the stern I haven't done yet as there is a few gap's which will have to be filled and sanded . I will do them then . the model is not this shiney just the light .
