A model reborn from destruction.
One of the many unfortunate losses of World War II, was the destruction of a detailed model of a Dutch man-of-war of the mid-17th century at the Holenzollern Museum, Berlin, during a bombing raid in 1944. Fortunately, this same model was documented by photographs and plans by Heinrich Winter in his book "Der Hollandische Zweidecker Von 1660-1670". The original name of !7th century ship reprented in this model is unknown, although it has been suggested it might be the JONGE PRINS.
An elegant minature scratch built model taken from the photos and plans by Herr Winter is this same Mid-17th century Dutch two decker, by Lloyd McCaffery at a scale of 1"=16'. This model is constructed out of box wood, holly, pear and lance wood.
Another example of the same 17th century Dutch model that was destroyed, is submitted by Auld Gunner on Facebook of the work by a Ukrainian modeler whose name I can not translate. Here is some pictures of that model.
This detailed stern carving represents the Arms of Orange surrounded by the English Order of the Garder. This kind of carving can only represent the highest quality of the ship modeler's art.

This has to be from the hands of a professional. In my wildest dreams could I ever attain such perfection.
To create such a modeling triumph becomes the realm of a masterpiece, which really few can attain. Out of the horrors of war, a work of art can be salvaged.
