Slowly progressing on my first model ship
Posted by ChrisSC on Sunday, March 1, 2020 3:20 PM

Hi all. I figured I would post some photos of my first attempt at building a model since I was a child many decades ago. It's a Minicraft 1/350 Titanic. Going is very slow as I am trying to learn how to do this somewhat decently and also develop some minimal skills.

The biggest challeng so far has been photo etch. The wood decking would be second, and painting in general is also challenging. I'm really useing this model as practice since I have a 1/350 Lusitania on the way and also purchased a 1/200 Trumpeter Titanic.

Obviously I am not going for accuracy in colors or anything else but I am enjoying finding a hobby that I would like to get reasonably proficient at. I have learned a lot already from the many mistakes I've made so far. I think and hope my next build will be better. This one is far from done though so I'm sure many more errors and learning will continue! Thanks for looking at my novice project!

I hope to improve my skill to eventually take this one on

Chris,

Unfortunately I’m not able to see the pictures you posted. Would love to see your build.

Steve

Ditto

Are you using a picture hosting site?

Would love to help with any questions. I'm not the best ship modler but have been fightning them for 50 years.

The Lucy sounds nice as well as the new Titanic.

Pictures are a bit of a problem, but once you learn it it becomes second nature.  First big problem is, you cannot copy an imagedirectly from your computer to the FSM site posting utility.

You must upload the image to an image hosting site.  I use a place called Postimage.  Once you have uploaded an image to the site, click on its thumbnail so you get the large image.  Then right-click on the image and an options window opens.  Select "copy image location".  This automatically copies the URL (address) to your copy function.  Then click on the icon for picture, the rectangle that looks like a mountain with a sun or moon in the quarter.  This brings up a window that asks for image source.  Place your cursor in that (upper) window and press control-v      Then hit OK (the program will automatically select everything else).  The picture will then appear and you can complete the rest of your post.

I'm using google photos. I thought they were viewable. This is a link to the album but I'm not sure why they can't be viewed.   https://photos.app.goo.gl/if1ENU7mMi8jGLv96

I followed the link. Very nice progress. It doesn't look like you're having too much of a problem to me.

I'm not a tech guy at all. I tried following the instructions from another post on this forum for how to share the pictures. Maybe it's a problem with Google. Google photos gives you the option to share, it provides a link for you to copy and paste. I did paste that link into the insert image icon here but it doesn't seem to work. I'll have to try another site as suggested.

Ditto on following the link. The pics look great. Looks like it's coming along nicely.

Keep up the good work.

When I was young I had electric trains in HO and N Guage but never really built anything other than a platform to put them on and a couple of bridges. I built models when I was a kid, by that I mean like 10 years old or so. I built 1/25 cars, a few ships, usually in one day and they most of the time wound up in demolision derbies with my friends models lol.

I do (mostly did as in past tense) a lot of work on muscle car restoration. That was a passion I spent a lot of money and time on. I had likeminded friends who had a shop that we did many project builds in. I'm older now and don't really want to do the heavy work anymore. I found this hobby seems to check a lot of the same boxes, mostly details which is kind of how we built the cars. I'm enjoying it even though I have had some frustration dealing with the tiny photo etch stuff.

Looking good.  That's right about where I've been for 6 months lol.  Did you use the kit supplied rigging or something else?  I can barely see the kit supplied stuff.  I have the same wood decks and chuckled at the use of every clamp in the house.  I did the same.

Heres my WIP some useful links in there.  Can believe my las post was may 2019 :o

Thanks. I am going to use this stuff called E Z Line. It was originally developed for model railroad telephone pole lines. It is very elastic, will stretch quite a bit and it loves CA glue. I bought two sizes, fine and heavy. I read about some people using it for rigging model ships somewhere online.

EZ line is a good standard for rigging, especially for the tight strands that are on the Titanic. For flag lanyards and some LF antennas I will use streched sprue to get the loose look.

I have been using Uschi lately, similar to EZ line

The problem is getting the address in the right form.  Different hosting sites have differing ways to get the right address.  For some, it is a left click, others right click.  Then, that usually brings up a window with options.  You have to select the right option to get the address that FSM's form needs.  You need to talk to someone using the same hosting site that you do.  I had problems with Google Photos myself, and went look for other options.  It may depend on what browser you are using.

I use Imageshack. There is a reasonable yearly charge, IMO, and have never had any issues.

I am using Scaledecks. I have read that a lot of the other decks come with their own adhesive which kind of scares me. I guess you have one shot at it and if it sticks in the wrong spot that's that. I understand there are ways around the other brands sticking immediately such as putting water on the deck so you can slide it around but I prefer the Scaledecks. The one I'm using you apply your own glue so you have time before it sticks for good.

Chris,

First off, you’re doing a great job on the Titanic. Your PE is fabulous even if you say you’re having some trouble with it. Heck, I’ll just send my PE over for you do if you don’t mind.

Good to see you got the picture issues resolved.

Thanks for the kind words. Last night I worked on setting up my brass masts and bent up about 15 more benches. Tonight I worked on the cranes....more Photo etch! It's very time consuming.

Thanks. I sort of mocked one of them up while I'm working on them. I cut slots in the kit cranes and I'm gonna try to glue the pulley in that slot. I don't know if I'll be successful....it is really hard to handle without bending stuff. Trying to glue it all together should be fun.
