Tamiya XF-9 hull red

  Before you spend money there. See if you can find Model Master or Testors " Flat Rust"

 If you look in the Scratchbuild section you will see my Tankers .They are painted with that. It appears to be a Red /Brown rather a straight base red!

If your air brushing, try mixing xf7 red with xf9 hull red. Start at 65% xf7 but I usually end up closer to 75% xf7. I end up mixing enough for one ship. That way, if you paint another ship you will have to mix again and your ratio will be slightly different, making you color a bit different too. In my research, if I've discovered one thing about anti fouling paint; is that they all look different IRL There are other brands that make make a pretty good match. Mission Model Paints; Anti Fouling Red mmp111. But I haven't tried it yet, as I'm still getting comfortable and practicing with their paints. Good luck!

I personally use Colour Coats enamel Norfolk 65a Anti Fouling Red from HB Hobbies although they are currently out.

If you want to use an Acrylic paint then Mission Models makes an acceptable Norfolk Red.

Tamiya's hull red is an IJN color, inappropriate for USN ships.  

My current choice is Vallejo Model Air Fire Red (71.084).  I will also use Reaper MSP Core Color Carrot Top Red (09242).  Both are acrylic.  I've heard of mixing flat red with flat black to make a hull red - but I've not had success with that

Explore other makers hull red, or mix your own. Despite being called out in the instructions of the Fletcher and being generically named 'hull red', the Tamiya color in question is the shade used by the Imperial Japanese Navy, which was more brown than red. AK, LifeColor, Vallejo, Colourcoats, Scalecolors are among the brands that have something closer to the red the US would have used. Norfolk #65 was the designation for the color during WW2. It could definitely vary in shade due to weathering exposure, etc. But it was not brown. 

It is a Coca Brown color.  The USS Langley kit calls for the same color but the paint is way darker than the color chart that came with the kit.  I used Tamiya hull red paint that comes in a rattle can.  It is much redder then the XF-9 paint.  I think the XF-9 paint will fit the hulls of German ships either WWI or WWII.  It does spay and lay nice but to brown for me for an american ship.
