I forgot about the France!  I understand that 1/350 is a great scale, but picture that collection of 1/600 liners in a display, especially given the quality of the work we are seeing here!

There are two kits of the Mauretania and one kit of the France currently on Oldmodelkits.com.  As expected, the France is expensive.  There are also two kits of the Canberra and one of QE II on ebay.

Wow I went and looked at that France on Old Model Kits. You certainly weren't kidding about the price! I bought the Glencoe version but I don't think I will ever build it, it just doesn't look like anything I could make a nice model out of. I understand the SS United States model is similarly underwhelming.
The 1/600 scale is actually quite a challenge to detail. I figured it would be a quick build but the smaller scale is time consuming. I'll see how this one turns out, if I like the results I may buy the other 1/600 liners. They are certainly easier to display at their size.

A member here bought the France and sent me some pictures of the kit in the box.

His particular copy- the quality of the resin castings was really horrible.

EDIT: Correction, it is the Normandie.

Bill, I think you might be thinking of The Normandie model as opposed to The France. I don't believe there is a resin France but I could be wrong.

Hey, Chris SC;

Do you have the Pixar lamp with you? I see his bright face right there on your bench LOL.LOL. Painting looks great like I said.

Thanks. The overhead lights reflecting off the glass I use to cut the PE.

The listing for the Airfix France on Oldmodelkits.com claims that the parts are molded in white and clear plastic.  Nowhere does it say that the kit is resin.

Chris, you are doing an exceptional job on this model!  It would make for an exceptional display should you wish to pursue a collection of liners in 1/600.

I added some windows to and dry fitted the upper deck. It will need a few adjustments but it lines up pretty good so far.

Well I don't know if it was worth the time and effort but there are now tiny white 1/600 PE anchor chains on there. I held them for painting with a tweezers and some leftover pieces of the PE tree.

It's funny, no matter what angle I take the picture with that light is always in the worst spot lol.

Added some PE stairs/ladders, doors, and decals to my 1/600 Queen Elizabeth. I will be putting more stairs and railings. I also started permanently gluing some of the decks on, and more test fitting.

The model doesn't come with the platform on the forecastle so I added it. I finished most of the stairs and am doing all the railings I won't be able to get to once the lifeboat davits are installed and in my way. I also glued on the bridge area and props. I think I'm going to do the lifeboat davits next. I have PE parts for them so it should take awhile.

Chris,

Your work is impeccable!  It is most impressive!

The proprietor of my LHS inherited thousands of unbuilt model kits about 1.5 years ago and he is still weeding through them.  I was just there an hour ago and he offered me an Airfix 1/600 RMS Mauretania, which I took.  It was free.  Would you like it?  If so, it is yours.  I also told him that if he has any others, I would take them.  Just let me know.

Bill, thank you so much for the compliments and for your kind offer. I just recently purchased the 1/600 Mauretania kit but I very much appreciate your offer. I think I have most of the ocean liner kits that were produced but I would be interested in any I may have missed or are unaware of.

I have decided to build more of these 1/600 kits as this scale has the biggest selection of ocean liners in the same scale. The smaller size and somewhat large number of ships I think will make a cool display.

So far I have the Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary (1/570), Mauretania, QE2, and Titanic. I am keeping a lookout for the France, but that one unfortunately is extremely rare and if found a high dollar item. I believe there are a 1/600 Queen Mary 2, and Canberra out there too. The last one I will build would be Titanic, I already have a 1/350 and 1/200 of that ship. I am quite honestly Titaniced out lol.

I am taking a liking to the 1/600's. I still prefer 1/350 but I'm enjoying building these much more than I thought I would.

Thanks again,
Chris

I decided against the PE davits, they are just too thin IMO to hold the lifeboats. I was going to use some of the parts and make a combo out of plastic and PE but I don't think it will look good, I am going to use the seats though. I painted and installed the funnels. All that remains are the railings, masts, lifeboats and rigging.

Chris,

I have asked my LHS owner to save any 1/600 Liners he may come across. That inheritance still has thousands of kits he has not yet inventoried.  I asked him specifically about the Airfix "France". He said that it is mine if he uncovers one.  I will let you know if he finds any that you don't have.

Your ship turned out fantasic.  In fact, your juxtaposition of the floor and glass doors as partial background for your models Bridge windows helps to give the impression that she's a good 4+ feet long with detail to match!

Very Nice Work.

I will enjoy your continued efforts on the Railings, Masts, and Rigging. I bet your Lifeboats turn out to be little models in themselves.

Some more progress on my 1/600 Queen Elizabeth. Davits are installed, lifeboats are finished, and I am starting to install some railings that will be easier to do now than when the lifeboats are in the way.

I have a built 1/350 Titanic amd a 1/350 Lusitania on hold waiting for parts. I also have a 1/600 and a Trumpeter 1/200 Titanic waiting to be built. Maybe I will turn one into an Olympic some day.

Looks great ! But I just realized that bare hull is shaped just like my Old Town canoe lol !! Not any kind of knock, just a realization. Very similar design,my canoe might have a bit more rocker.

Ya know I've never built a cruise ship. Hmmm. I wouldn't really want to build the Titanic I'd rather stay with something that didn't sink ( just me thinking out loud). And bigger is better or my wife rejects it as a mantel piece lol. I had been looking for larger liberty ships to build, seem to have failed in my search. My father served for a time the last year of WWII on one supplying war ships and doing ship to shore supplies in boats ( LCVP style boats).

That's funny because when I first opened the box I told my friend that it just needs paddles and you could use it as a canoe lol! It really is a huge hull. I have been putting off starting it because I know it will take an immense amount of time to complete as I have bought just about every aftermarket detail part for it that is available. The other thing is it also comes with a lighting kit which I have no experience with whatsoever.
I really don't have a desire to light any of my models but I am leaning towards lighting this Titanic. It is probably the only model I will attempt that on. I bought a bunch of fiber optic rods in different diameters that I plan to run to each porthole...we'll see how it goes. I think it will take a year to do it right so for now I'm having fun with less complicated models. I am also kind of tired of seeing Titanic models everywhere, I wish Trumpeter would have put this effort into a less common ship but I guess that's where the money is.
