Display stand
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, August 9, 2004 5:01 PM
Hi all,

I'm new to ship modeling. I've been doing armor for years.

I would like to make a display stand for my 1/350 USS Arizona. I have the wood (1/2 inch oak board) but I need the brass posts for the ship to sit on. Where should I get these from?

Thanks,
Jesse

Jesse,

The best kept secret in ship finials is your local Home Despot, or Lowes...go to the lighting section, and search out brass finials used for lamps...you may have to improvise a bit, as some are threaded, some are straight-through, etc...

I've been using these for years. Your other option is to order them from BlueJacket...here's the link:

Jeff,

Thanks. I'll try bluejacket. I went to Home Depot but the selection was really bad. For $12 (including shipping) I'll go with bluejacket.

You might also wich to consider displaying it drydock-style on square blocks.

Hi Jesse:

I am using a 1/2" x 5" x 36" oak base for a Revell 1/72 U Boat and a pair of 1/4" x 3 1/2" machine bolts with hex heads to act as supports. The shaft is bare polished steel about 2 1/2" long. Other lengths are available and I believe brass is also available.

I drilled out 1/2" x 3/8" holes in the underside of the base(this hides the bolt heads) and inserted the bolts from underneath, making sure they are absolutely vertical, and then screwed them into nuts that I had embedded in the keel (from the inside) and glued in place with Le Page Universal Adhesive which is a super glue.

To make sure the nuts were properly lined up, and therefor the boat ,I screwed them on the bolt heads (that I inserted through holes in the model bottom)and 'tacked' them in place with crazy glue. Once alignment was confirmed I used the other glue to lock them in place and set everyhthing aside to dry.

After inserting the bolts through the base and screwing them into the boat keel nuts, I pressed the hex heads into the base holes by placing the base on a flat surface and pressing down. A retaining strip of metal can be screwed in place if need be to make sure the bolts stay in place.

I've used this approach on several models and it works for me.

Hope this helps.

here is a nother ideal for a diplay stand that I made using a wood base and 1/4 wood stock.

I used wood glue and twine which was wraped around each end to brace. This made it look like a real pier and may be something you may want to do.Digger

Jesse, You can go to the Model Shipways web page, they sell nice almost finished base boards only requiring some light sanding and dying if you want another color, also they have the brass posts on different sizes. You might save on shipping if getting everything from the same vendor.
