                        Greetings down under from up north, eh?
                        Traditionally, half models were used in the 19th century to investigate hull shapes and to take lines from for the loft floor where the frames were made. For that reason they were unadorned, and you may wish to consider leaving the hull natural except for your waterline.
                        If you do want to fabric the deck then get something with the tightest weave possible, and wash it first to make it more pliable, then try doping it down with model airplane clear dope.

                        Hi Shane,
                        When I was building working model boats I built the Billings Dragon Class and to 'Canvas' the deck I used some fine silk that I got from one of the Sydney model shops. I then sealed it with Humbrol balsa sealer, several coats sanding between, then I just left it, the colour being like sealed canvas. I also read in Model Boats a construction article where they wraped the hull in pantyhose and sealed the relevent areas with normal paint trimming to size after. Anyhow that was my excuse when the wife found a set of pantyhose in the glove box!! (joke)

                        I haven't had to replicale this before but I think I would try to find a fabric with a tight weave in a store. Hold on a bit and someone will be along to help.
                        Nice half-hulls BTW.

                        Ive built two half models on the same backing board and am about to paint in the waterlines and then varnish them and build a nice Sheoak frame to finish them off... but prior to doing so am curious about the decks and hulls.

                        The designs are both by one BB Crowninsheild... the top one in the pic is his personal 40ft schooner "Fame" designed in 1910 and the bottom his Dark Harbor 12 1/2... now all those years ago they used to use canvas soaked in some sort of goop over the decking to seal it down... Im wondering what exactly would I use to replicate this on models such as these?



                        I am presently cutting out to 1/2in > 1ft scale a 56ft Broome Pearling Lugger and a 26ft re-design of that craft that I hope to eventually build full size... so I feel that I should at least try to get this first one right so Im ready to sail full and bye into the nextCool [8D]
