Questions on Saturn V and other rockets.
Posted by Kentucky Colonel on Monday, May 12, 2014 7:46 PM

It's been 40 years since I build the Saturn V or any of the others. And back then I didn't build them very well, I didn't have anybody to teach me anything on model building. This time I want to make them much better.

I've got a few questions.

On the Saturn V and most of the other rockets they call for "matt paint" Now from my armor building I learned to use Future before and after putting on the decals then spray the whole thing with Dullcote.

Can I do the same thing to the Saturn V or is there a different better way?

Also I can't seem to find pictures that show the true colors of the fuel tanks in the first and second stage as well as the inside of the third stage that houses the LEM. They sure don't look right on the box.

Thanks for any help!!

One different way- not better or worse- is to use gloss paints in the painting process. Paint on your main colors- go straight to decals, then apply your preferred matt coat. It cuts out the Future coat. Nothing more than a step or time saver.

As far as actual colors, I am encountering the same thing in research for an upcoming Gemini build. One thing I have done is to do image searches using the various names- equipment module, retrograde module or coupler, etc. You may want to try the same method with the various Saturn V stages & components. Much of the stuff was photographed with color film by NASA. The trick is finding the images.

Won't Dullcote hurt the decals? I've heard it can cause them to "sliver".

I will be using Space model Systems Ultimate decals.

No. Silvering is caused by air caught between the decal and the underlying surface. A flat finish, with its microscopically rough surface gives lots of places for air to get trapped under the decal. Gloss surfaces, being much more smooth, reduce, but may not always eliminate that. The main reason for a Future overcoat of decals is to smooth them into the surrounding area due to the leveling properties of Future. It will remove the "step" around the decal by evening it out. But I have painted several models with gloss paints, applied decals on there when dry, and top coated with gloss, satin or flat clears and had no problems with silvering that I have not had on a Futured or other clear gloss coated surface.

Oh yes, I rarely if ever give that top coat of Future to my decals. I almost always go straight to the top coat on them without a Future coat in between.

Thanks!!

I did what you said and did a search for pictures for several "parts" of the Saturn V instead of the whole thing and came up with several good pictures. The inside of the  Lunar Module Adapter is an off white but the part of the third stage where the LM sets is a green color. I'm going to keep looking like you said, for pictures of the "parts" rather than the whole thing.

Yeah, I have the new re issue of the Revell 1/48 kit and did some searching for that area too. Glad I could help you out. Try some different search engines as well. Google, Bing, Yahoo...
