Ahh, nice pics!

Great 50's era paint job. Saving them for future reference.

Fish? Actually they do kinda look like "Puffer Fish". The ones that inflate their body when threatened.

Not your Grandfather's Space Station. The color combinations are great.

That would be a nice connection, but neither of us had read any Heinlein by then.  I've read a lot of his stuff, but not that short story.  I'm not sure if my brother has ever read any Heinlein...

Matt, I was wondering if "fish" might be a reference to space taxis in a Heinlein short story, maybe from "The Green Hills of Earth." The nickname you and your brother came up with certainly sounds like Heinlein. Smile

When my brother and I had that model as kids, we called the Taxi "Fish," I don't remember why.  I bought two of those kits this year, one for me, and one for my nephews to build.

Thank you Sprue-ce Goose. Actually, my kit's parts didn't have much flash on them. I guess I lucked out somehow. The problem I found with the small parts is that they were molded off-register. I decided to just live with those little flaws, and concentrate on the colors and markings I wanted.

Matt / Watchmann, thank you also. "Fish"?

Here's a montage of 1950s space concept art I put together to use as a reference while working.

Nice paint schemes !

You also did a good job cleaning up the abundant flash on the small parts.

Thanks for posting the photos

Very cool, Tom.  I like the paint job you gave to the Fish.

Hi everyone.

This is the first model I've posted here at FSM. Lindberg's "Space Base & Satellite Explorer." Finished it yesterday. The station's docking pad was modified by moving the location of the radar, adding open and closed docking hatches, and scratchbuilding a long range antenna - for communication with ships on their way to the Moon and Mars. I docked one of the station's taxis with the shuttle from the second model in the kit, and made a custom stand so the shuttle and station could be displayed together. I know they're supposed to be different scales, but it looks okay to me.

My inspiration was the space concept art found in non-fiction space books of the 1950s. (There's a great site called "Dreams of Space - Books and Ephemera" filled with illustrations from that decade.) Space exploration was more colorful in the 1950s - back when it was still something we could only imagine!
