Weathering a Black Airplane
Posted by Rob S. on Friday, January 31, 2014 12:33 PM

I just finished the Revell Lanc Mk.I kit and was generally happy with the way it turned out, except, for the lack of weathering on the entire black underside. I used the tried and true methods of pre and post shading etc. for the green and brown upper surfaces, but, fell short on the black.

So, looking for some advice, pics or online references for my next Lanc (Airfix B.II) to make the black 'pop' like the upper surfaces do.

My only experience with a black aircraft is my 1/48 Monogram RF-101B.  I used gloss, semi-gloss and matte black enamel in various places and then used acrylic clear in the same three "tones" to accentuate lines and panels.  Good luck with your project!

Mix up various shades of black with red/brown/grays and post shade. Same as any other color. Then try a light brown or neutral gray wash.

Wow! That is one sweet Voodoo Tex! Have you considered submitting your kit to the FSM gallery?

Thank you folks!  I appreciate the nice compliments a lot.  How does one submit a build to the FSM gallery?

I find the undersides of black aircraft often pick up dust, so I weather that area with a very thin airbrushed coat of flat tan, while I use white or light gray topside, since the fading and chalking on top seems to be pretty neutral in color.
