Goo Gone will remove all  masking residue and leave PFM coats intact. I have never had it affect either enamel or acrylics.  As always though-proceed with caution.That is original formula  Goo Gone. My understanding  is Goo Gone formulas labeled Pro or Advanced is a much more powerful product that may indeed destroy your painting job.

I believe that a mention of using Goo Gone for this very purpose  was made in a recent issue of FSM magazine.

I've used the circle tempate technique before, worked well for me. Painted overall white, then blue with a big circle, then red with a smaller circle. Here's 2 pics:
