Submarine streaks

I am looking forward to this discussion myself.  I am doing a PBY and I think that a mud wash is kinda out on this one.

I'm just spitballing this one, but I had pretty good results using a wash of Tamiya light sand mixed with water on an AH-64 recently.  I imagine you could do something similar and brush it on and then use a brush dipped in rubbing alcohol to streak it as desired.  I would recommend testing on some kind of scrap plastic first.

I'd recommend using a light gray mixed with a small amount of your base color and dry brushing along the hull.  I had good success with this method for a 1/700th scale WW II carrier in the navy blue, measure 21 scheme.

You didn't mention what type of boat you are building, but this method should work on dark or lighter paint.

Jay Jay, I believe the same technique will work on your PBY.

If you want translucent streaks, the two best ways to do them are either drybrushing or airbrush with paint flow turned way back.

It looks like the AK product is just another enamel. Shouldn't oils do the same thing?

Yes.  If you use a fine tip, and dial the paint flow back you can make nice translucent streaks.  A broad tip and low paint flow can create a large area chalking or weathering.

You've received some fair advice .

  I use a wash of one part color , Ten parts water  or thinner . It's hard to see , but over time it will become more visible . Don't forget to have your wash run from the deck center-line , down the sides . Never from bow to stern on these puppies .
