Panther grill cover materials
Posted by TxAggie05 on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 7:24 AM

What are some good materials to replicate Panther grill covers?  I'm looking for something along the size of the photo etch ones. I tried wire screen patches and the scale is too big. Has anyone tried mosquito netting or similar consistency?

Also, I'm looking to replicate the small chains on the Panther. Has anyone ever tried small jewelry chains?  I'm looking for .3mm roughly.

Thanks

Screen materials come in very many mesh sizes.  Consider screens other than window screen material.  The finest I have seen were brass or stainless steel. Do a google search for brass screen and stainless screen.  They are used in filtering.  Places like Small Parts and other similar industrial supply places are good places to start.  Some of the better hardware stores have a few sizes of brass screens.  Paint stores may have some filters that have usable screens.

I find brass screening material much easier to work with than stainless, if you have a choice.  I find working with stainless screen I poke myself a lot and end up with tiny holes in my fingers :-(

I have also seen photo etch grating material (not screen).  I think it may have been K & S but not sure.  I have seen them in hobby shops, and also a couple of model ship supply places like Bluejacket or Model Expo.

Michaels and Hobby lobby have fine chain material in their jewelry craft sections.

I used some plastic window screen for my Tamiya Panther.  It turned out pretty good I guess.

If you want to go cheap, you might look for some decorative ribbon with an open weave. That's what I used here.

I found my model screening in a tobacco store of all places.  it's pipe fiter about the size of a quarter, brass or steel, and they're cheap at 10 cents apiece.

Thanks for the tips guys!  I went to hobby lobby and found some tu tu fabric material and got the minimal size for $.16. Haven't painted it yet but I think it will turn out great.  I also found the bead chains and got several of them for $6.
