Baking soda and CA reaction?
Posted by JMorgan on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 4:18 PM

Does anyone know what type of CA glue works well with baking soda? When I mixed the two it reacted and made some kind of chips that look like crack. Thanks in advance.

Thats what happens when you mix CA & soda bicarbonate. It is not a mix and apply thing. The reaction happens quickly

The process for filling a seam is to flow in some CA then apply a small scoop of baking soda. Thin CA is good here.  Remove the excess.  The surface will be granular. Repeat as needed until the seam is full, to possibly slightly over full. Then sand smooth.  If you wait until tomorrow it will likely be harder than the surrounding material.

You can fill a divot or build-up/repair an area with thicker CA. This may take a moment longer than with the thin stuff.  I have repaired household items, picture frames, etc. with CA & baking soda.   Just remember to sand right away

So, if I understand correctly, the mix doesn’t require CA accelerator?

The baking soda acts as the accelerator in this reaction.

Correct.

Also, I only resort to this option when I'm pressed for time or if it's in a spot that wont be seen.

Not even close ... the acrylic is stable, non reactive and it handles much differently.  Try doing what I've shown here with baking soda or talc.  Even if you can't find the acrylic powder that I use, you're still better off trying something like nail acrylic.  But as I said on the video ... not all the acrylc powders that I tried work when mixed with the ZAP CA that I use.

I guess I bought the wrong stuff.

Just a heads up for all you modelers; Pyrax Rapid Repair cold cure denture base material powder doesn't work any better than baking soda when mixed with CA.
