Links for Rusted Panels

Think I'm going to do the next project (66 Fairlane) with opening up some hole from behind as in this YouTube video.

I'll try some things to create some dents.  I'm next going to try a combination of the hairspray technic and layering textures.

68GT, first I need to say that Hetzer was one incredible build, pure genius.

I was thinking on how I would rust out a car panel, and living in Michigan I've seen my share of rust buckets. Again its not much different that rusting out any other type of vehicle, but to get that "rust through" look, first I might sand down very small sections of plastic where you want the most damage even to the point of making a small hole. I think I would then apply a base coat of a rust brown then build up layers around it in different types of rust, old fresh etc. To layer it I might use a Mr Surfacer 500 or a Stucco paint in very small sections and keep layering with different rusts until you get the effect you want. I would use a mix of pigments and pre mixed rust like what Mig offers.

I would try this on a scrap piece first but I think it would work. I've never done a complete rust through but  enough rust on other AFV's to think this would work.

I hope I gave you some ideas but there's a lot out there on rust and I'm certainly no expert.

I can't say that an armor article would help much. They have thick panels and don't rust through or get bent up like a regular car or truck would. The link I had showed how to think the plastic to create rust through and make week points so you can heat and bend up body panels.

It would also be a good idea for the people who made these tutorials to update the materials. Kind of hard to mimic a technique using colors and/or paint brands that don't exists anymore

GT there are a bunch of You Tube videos on rust, its the same whether is an old Rambler or an AFV metal rusts pretty much the same its just depends on how deep you want to make it or how old or new the rust is. There are a lot of AM products out there such as MIG, Vallejo, AK etc. Try our own Armor Forum, we use rust all the time and somebody will have an easy tutorial.

Why reinvent the wheel.

Even though I do mostly scifi I constantly check out armor, aircraft, car, and miniature forums. Another excellent source is the model railroading hobby.
