Using my Twin Tip sharpie
Posted by Arespontus on Sunday, September 25, 2011 5:29 PM

Hello

I read somewhere on this site that If I use a sharpie to enhance the panels on my Aircraft, it might bleed throught the grey paint from my airbrush after a couple of weeks.

If I do use the sharpie I will be using acrylic paints over top of it. Will the use of acrylic paints stop the sharpie from bleeding through the grey paint.

I want to test this out on my Revell F-14D Tomcat 1:48

Is this a wise idea to try out, Or am I just going to make a mess.

You're going to make a mess. But it's always good to test to see for yourself.

Do you have a scrap model laying around you could test it on?  Best way to be sure is to do a practice run 1st.  That's how I'd do it.

Although, a sharpie I would think would make too "sharp" a line, if you'll pardon the pun.  Not sure you could get the blended effect you're looking for.

Try it on a rubbish kit first.

Don't do it! Please don't do it! I've used a black sharpie to quicken the process of pre-shading and I paid for it...on 3 different models.

If there is any thing I preach against here, its the use of a sharpie! I used it on the panel lines prior to painting with Tamiya acrylics. At first it was Ok, which is why I was able to do this with 3 different models. But when I shot over it with a coat of Model Master Dull Coat, the sharpie stood out immediately...not sure the chemical process but it looked as though I'd sharpie'd OVER the OD green! The other models I hadn't clear coated eventually showed sharpie bleeding through...

So yeah, I don't recommend it at all!

HERE is a link to a previous thread regarding this...there is a pic of a ruined model, similar to my experience, after a dull coat...
Regardless, dull coat or not, I'd stay away as they do tend to bleed through...

Use the sharpie for tracing along oil lines in a wheel well. No no on the pre-shading!!
