for rust liquid for washes, I like to use the rust color from several enamel hobby paint brands.  Each brand seems to be a slightly different color, so making a couple of washes with different color seems to add to effect. I just thin the color a lot as I would with any wash.

I've done this before and it works very well.

I've always just ground up the solid material and let the liquid evaporate.

Do you save the liquid too?

Would you believe it, I was at my monthly club meet last night and one of the members said the same thing. He used water only and when the wool broke down he evaporated the water off, then ground it down

HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN RUST POWDER

Hi folks,

Time for some alchemy at home...

just found a very good toot in another forum: How do you create your very own rust liquid for your vehicles, tanks, rooftops etc.?!

Basically you need just five things:

> Steel wool (the finer, the better, but make sure you take real steel wool, not household steel wool with soap etc.)

> vinegar essence

> a plastic bucket

> fine mesh

> fresh air...

And thats it!

Put the steel wool in the bucket filled with vinegar and make sure to vent at least once a day - fresh air accelerates the progress. After 3-4 days the liquid should be okay,
Filter the liquid through fine mesh and let dry - the result will be a fine rust powder (REAL rust...).

Information for the mods:
I dont own the pictures rights, so if thats okay for the moderation, I give you the link to the tutorial situated in another forum. If not okay, please feel free to edit and Ill ask if the User, which I know quite good, can send me the pictures!

Find the pictures here...

Cheers and happy modelling!
