I am pretty much a noob, so I am hoping one of the pros here can expand on this and go into more detail. I have read somewhere about using toilet paper lightly soaked in water mixed w/ white glue. You then pack it in engine cowlings, gear housing, etc. so you can spray.

I normally use tape, but I'm no pro. Thirty minutes isn't too much time to spend on a masking job, I've spent a lot more than that on areas that needed to be masked.

I do *NOT* like liquid masks. I've tried them many times and every time I swear I'll never do it again. They usually mask OK but trying to get them off is usually a nightmare.

I'm not sure waht you're masking, but here are a couple things for future reference.
Cut the tape is very small strips for the edges. It will hold complex shapes much better that way.
Aim the paint flow (assuyming rattle can or airbrush) away from the taped edge so the pressure from the compressed air will not push the apint under the mask as much.
If using a rattle can, hold it farther away than usual, dissipating some of the air pressure and pushing less paint directly against the edge of the mask.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

well 30mins of taping did the trick good enough I think; still curious what the pros would have suggested.

in this case; I need to paint my front engine cowling before the fan. but the fan is already painted. so I need to mask off the fan and cone.

but the fan is a rough edge to the cowling; so paint will bleed like crazy. and even so; the cone makes a flat peice of tape impossible...

is there like a decent liquid mask I can use? elmers glue? anything?
