Stripes are stripes, and if they want to get out a ruler, let 'em. Of course they need to have something to back up their interpretation of "Proper Width" to Tongue [:P]

Thanks 9mm.

I errantly used "invasion stipes" interchangably with "ID stripes" (much like others use "magazine" and "clip" interchangably for firearms). My D model has five 3/8" stripes, white-black-W-B-W. I'm happy with how my masking job turned out, but I'm sure someone will correct the size.

Maybe I did mean "invasion stripes"......I dunno.

Correct me if Im wrong but I know Ive read id stripes in 1/48 should be 5/16 or 15 inches 1/1. INVASION stripes on the other hand were 18 inches for single engine and 24 inches for multi engine. So 3/8 should be perfect for your P-51.

Thank you all for your responses. I have figured it out, thanks to the article that Scott (MusicCity) linked. I did something similar. I had read where U.S. stripes were 15"...in 1/48 scale my stripes should be 5/16" wide (I errantly made those on my P-51 3/8"...off by 1/16", oh well). I established the inner border of the white stripe, then used 3/8" wide strips laid side-by-side, establishing the outer border. All that area was sprayed white, then I again used strips to define where the black stripes would go.

Aw, h-e-l-l, I'm rambling. When my wife gets back from vacation (she's got the digital camera) I'll post pics...turned out GREAT!

It is my understanding that many of the stripes were hurriedly applied in the field with buckets and brushes and not a lot of uniformity, other than the number of stripes and general location (i.e. sides of fuselage, undersides of wings). Perhaps just masking the general outline and brush painting would provide the most accurate results. My 2 cents [2c]

Help w/ Masking D-Day Stripes
Posted by MA Cooke on Friday, July 29, 2005 4:56 AM
Hi all.

I'm to the point that I'm ready to mask and spray white for D-Day stripes on my P-51, and I haven't a clue as to how to go about it. If the stripes don't happen to line up with panel lines, how do I do it so they come out even?

Thanks in advance.

Mitch
