how to make stubborn decals settle
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, September 8, 2005 2:34 AM
its really dissapointing whenever i buy kit from this particular manufacturer whenever i come down to the decal placement. i just really find it hard to just let it stay. i dont know if im the only one having trouble with it. any suggestions on how to get it right? it always gets to the part that it would peel off and crack after a couple of days.whats the best thing to do?

This is my decal sequence

1) glosscoat, a smooth surface prevents silvering
2) put decals on, I use vinegar/sol/set to soften the decals
3) with really stuborn decals, use future a setting solution

Then finish the model (gloss coat, wash flat coat) as wanted.

You are not the only one having problems with decals, for more idea's look in the "decal"section of the forum.

Ditto the use of Future. Place a small dab on the place where the decal goes and then apply a little on top. As the Future drys, it will cause the decal to pull down on the surface. Use a very light coat of Future.

Sounds like a Tamiya kit. I seal the model with Future first then apply the decal with a drop of Micro-Set followed by an application of Micro-Sol and if that does not do the trick then I'll apply some Gunze Mr Marker Soft. Of course if possible I will replace the decals with an aftermarket set and just step around the problem.

Realize, too, that some decals just stink! And as Swanny said; check out aftermarket. It's worth the wait and money as you usually have lots of time devoted to the project by now.
