I've been using the same thing I prime everything with...Mr. Surfacer 1200 diluted 30% with laquer thinner. It's worked well for me.

Edited to say: I run it through my airbrush and apply 2 coats.

Ditto to what styrene said.

I also recommend cleaning them with denaturated alcohol prior to painting.

I personally like flat enamels, especially grays and black. I prefer enamels because they seem to have a better "bite" than acrylics.
