Resin casting question-copies of copies
Posted by wing_nut on Saturday, September 24, 2005 7:38 AM
What happens to the quality of the piece if a cast is made from a mold made from an already resin cast piece. Like a Xerox of a Xerox of a Xerox will loose quality.

What if I make 1 of what I need then cast it… make a new mold with 2 and cast and make a new mold with 4? Now at least I can cast 4 at a time instead of 1.

I have never done any resin casting before so I don’t know which would be cheaper… making 3 separate molds…. Or just mixing batches of resin to cast one pieces at a time to get as many as I need.

It isn't very hard to clean up the cast parts to make them as good as the original. I assume you are trying to make multiple parts based on a part you made.

Well yes but have not made it yet. I have a 1/24 Fw 190D-9and the flaps are pretty bad. The spaces between the ribs looks like to molds were made with a roto-tiller AND a sink hole in the middle of each as well. I just figured it would be easiest to sand the whole thing clean and make the rib detail but there are just so manyDisapprove [V]

The funny thing is... as i was typing this out another idea came to me that will be SO much easier.Big Smile [:D]

Wingnut,
I can assure you that it's not necessarily the case that a resin copy of a copy will be of inferior quality - but it often does happen that way.
It all depends on the condition of the part and how well its molded.
I've been making masters and casting resin parts for many years, and I can tell you that RTV molds can (and do) provide a PERFECT negative image of the original - even down to duplicating dusty fingerprints!
As long as care is taken, the first duplicate off of the copy should be pretty perfect - but due to poor technique or materials, home casting often produces sub-par copies of copies. Having a vacuum chamber and using very soft RTV produces excellent results, but a chamber isn't easy to come by.
If you plan on making only a few copies, then make one mold and cast from that mold. If you plan on making 20 or 30, then use the MASTER to make a whole bunch of molds - that way, all of your resin copies are copies of the master - not of a copy. Get it?
Good luck, mate.

Cheers, LeeTree
