White glue vs. The stuff that is made for clear parts
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, October 1, 2005 1:48 PM
I am stuck on this one because I hear things that pull in different results for each method used. Some say white glue is great because it dries clear, I am sceptical because I have always seen fogging occur. Then there is the clear parts glue put out by Testors, which I haven't tried but have heard good and bad things about. I just don't want a fogged canopy and no residue on my windshields.

I've used white glue with no problems. I have used a Humbrol product called Clear Fix and it works well with no problems either.

I know that CA glues will fog a canopy but apparently if they are dipped in Future, this does not happen.

I have had great results with Micro "Crystal Klear". Any good hobby store should have it. I have never had a problem with adhesion or fogging. I even used it to form a lens on a car model b/c I lost the clear part. I've also used superglue (CA) to hold clear parts on a model where the window just didn't want to stay in place and I was in too much of a rush to file it down. I needed it to bond and hold insatanteously, so I used baking soda as an accelerator which also kept it from fogging (not the baking soda per se but the instantaneous curing of the glue). I've also heard of using watch cement but I've never tried it.

Crystal Klear looks like white glue in the tube but must be formulated differently. Anytime I tried white glue it didn't dry clear (more like a translucent gray) and had no strength... I think saliva would have been a better adhesive than white glue.

Testors Cement for clear parts works great and won't craze or fog clear parts. It will set up a stronger bond than Elmers. Crystal Klear is also very nice. I have never used watch cement.

CA can fog clear parts even after a coat of Future.

Baking soda isn't something you should use as an accelerator because it will naturally decay overtime. You will notice something oozing out of it a little down the line.
