Pastel Dust.......Before or after future?
Posted by cj95 on Saturday, October 1, 2005 10:28 PM

Title pretty much says it all.
Are pastels better over bare paint, or do they go on better over a gloss finish?

The simple answer is, it depends. If you are using pastels in a wash, then they are better over over Future. If you are using pastels to simulate rain streaks, general dust, or soot staining, they are generally best when applied as the last step in weathering. In these cases, pastels work better over a clear flat coat. This gives the powder something to "bite" onto.

Normally I shoot gloss, then wash, then a light flat coat seal it all and give pastels something to stick to followed by a very light flat coat to seal the pastels. My preferred flat coat is Polly Scale thinned about 60:40 clear to thinner with 45% isopropanol, shot at 45 pis from my Paasche H from about 8".

One thing you have to remember is that when applying pastels and then covering them with a clearcoat is the fact the clear coat (whether flat, semi-gloss or gloss)will tone down the pastels. Almost to the point of making them disappear. Try to apply the pastels until you think that it's way too much and then apply the clear. Experiment a little to see what works for you.

Hit your local drug store and buy some eyeshadow swabs -- these are great for applying ground pastels.
