I also use mineral spirits to thin the artists oils. I use this wash over acrylics with a coat of Future with good results. without the thinner, the washes tend to "soak" into the model and paint, and the thinner also doesn't flow as well over a matte finish.

I've used both Turpenoid and Mineral Spirits for oil washes over Future with good results. The keys are to ensure you have a nice smooth finish with the Future and that it's fully cured. In addition, use high quality oils, such as ones available at art and craft stores.

So far the best thinner I've found for oil washes is Turpenoid...not turpentine.

Oil paints themselves cannot harm enamels or lacquers, but when thinned, they can strip the underlying colors. I prefer to use odorless oil thinner from the same brand as the oil paints you bought. I have used oil washes on MM Clear Acrylic with much success, but Future didn't stand up.
