How to stripe 1/72nd scale aircraft weapons like bombs and missiles
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 23, 2005 4:21 PM
Is there any tool marketed or homemade that can be used to turn these small weapons for putting stripes on with a brush so the line comes our even? I am currently working a couple of projects after not having modeled since I was a kid about seventeen years ago. I seem to remember an issue of Finescale talking about making a tool that would turn bombs and missiles but do not have a clue as to how to do this.

As always, thanks for the information!

I just use masking tape for stripes. Cut a piece the width of the stripe and put it right where you want the stripe to be. Put two more pieces on each side of that piece, butted right up against it, then pull the one in the middle out. You should have a nice, even mask for the stripe.

Try putting some paint on the dull side of an X-Acto blade and rotate the part against it. With practice you can get thin, consistent stripes easily.

I read an article in FSM (I forget the issue- it was the one where they featured the B-52) where the author fabricated a make shift "lathe" out of an old rechargeable screwdriver. I had one laying around. I took a small piece of plywood and attached a battery holder, switch (both from Radio Shack), and the screwdriver. Attach the bomb/missle to the screwdriver. The driver turns slowly enough you can paint a decent line. I'll try to look for the issue of FSM. It probably will explain it better than I just did.My 2 cents [2c]

Pactra trim tape is fantastic for that purpose. It comes in a number of colors and widths. I used it for this Phantom:

I also save spare decals-which be trimmed down to the right size. Since I screw up so many kits I have a nice inventory of colours.

Same her swanny. I used the tape on my 1/72 scale Revell B-52 bombers bombs! The only problem with tape is that the one end can unravel overtime cause the tape loses its adhesive qualities. Big Smile [:D]

I think I afixed mine with a tiny bit of superglue where the edges met.
