More Future stuff...
Posted by JoeRugby on Monday, January 30, 2006 10:27 PM
I was applying a wash to a P40 this evening.  Typically I use Isopropol aclohol to thin my acryllics, so I used this for a wash with some black acryllic.  Bad move...the future actually "crazed" and went to a foggy white!  A quick rub down with a poliching cloth got rid of the fog...but just watch out!  I thought Future was pretty tough...guess not.  I did double and triple check that the Future was dry, yes it was...what happened?

isopropil does a great job thinning and cleaning acrylic.  i mostly use it to clean my airbrush or strip paint (i use acrylic) but it's worked nominally at thinning paint for airbrushing as well.  since future is acrlyic, the alcohol does a great job attacking it as well.

Future will do that with most solvents...even prolonged exposure to water. But, the good news is, that most of the time, the fog will just go away once it has time to dry. It happens to me every time I get some micro-sol on a future coat (i try to keep most of it on the decal). But, it goes away 99% and another shot of future clears it up like new.

Use water with a drop of soap or detergent to make your wash instead of Future. Works like a charm, and the brief exposure to water will not affect the Future.

Triarius, I think JoeRugby was using alcohol, not future to make his wash.

But, Triaruis is correct, just some water and a drop or two of dish soap (to help break surface tension) is what I use. It is a mild as you can get.

Ah! I misunderstood—comes from not sleeping (wish I could say it was because I was working on styrene!) I thought he was using a mix of Future thinned with isopropyl. That might work, but it would have to be carefully applied to small areas.

I have also added a drop or two of alcohol to water washes when I wanted them to bite into the painted surface more. I usually don't use soap in these. Less of the wash will wipe off—good for when you want a more general modification of color over a broad area. If you want to try this, it is better to test it on a scrap of painted plastic first to make sure you are getting the effect you want. As I said, more of such a wash will remain on the surface.
