Washes and thinness
Posted by JMorgan on Saturday, May 23, 2015 1:27 PM

Hi guys. I am perplexed as to how thin a wash should be with oil paints.

For an overall wash, I use a ratio of 1 to 20.

For a pin wash, I use a ratio of 1 to 10.

I use MIG and W&N oils and Mona Lisa odorless thinner.

It is not critical.  Thinner is better, it just may take more applications to get the contrast you want.

I am for the consistancy of coffee, and that never steers me wrong.  Unless it's early morning, the wash is brown, and I'm still drinking my first cup of coffee....

The rule of thumb and the best way I can describe it is less paint and more thinner, in other words tinted thinner and not thinned paint.

Excellent way to put it!
