You could use any gloss colour but anyone's guess what it would turn out like, only one way to find out.

Mick is correct, but I am not sure it would have to be gloss. The base coat does not have to be solid either. I generally use Tamiya TS-30 Silver Leaf, either straight out of the can and/or decanted for my airbrush, as a prime coat. If you look at a real AMF aircraft, it does not have a solid even finish. You can represent this by various blacks, grays, and some blues, or what ever blotches of paint. You can do some of your panel variation this way. The TS-30, or what ever, is sprayed over the entire model, then the selective pre-shading, and finally the Alclad with its panel variations.

Be aware that Alclad II is a lacquer based paint; which means any base or pre-shading paint must be compatible with it. I think that enamel pre-shading will work; but test it first.
You only need a gloss base for the High Shine Alclads. Before i switched to Alclad primers, i used Humbrol black enamel and that worked fine.

I agree. The polished aluminum is critically dependent on the undercoat- other shades less so. I have used gloss blue under polished aluminum and it worked fine. I have also used gloss yellow under a couple of Alclad shades to get a sort of magnesium effect- not quite as good, but not bad. Easy enough to experiment with different colors and sheen.
I also use enamel- Testors gloss black (the two colors I used above were also enamels). I have a drying box, and I make sure paint is hard and dry before putting the Aclad over it.

As has been stated, you only need to use black on the high shine Alclad lines. For just plain-ol' aluminum I use Mr. Surfacer 1500 as a primer. Never failed me yet.

I have used Alclad II over a primer base of Vallejo black acrylic primer that is a satin finish with great results. The high shine of chrome needs a gloss base supposedly, you could even apply over a brushed on future coat.

The high sheen colors- chrome and polished aluminum- do need a dark color beneath them. The secret to getting the gloss sheen is to put it on very thin. Thus, the undercoat is very important and the color is quite discernable.
