I've been using the Iawata HP-CS for about 2 years now and as long as you keep it clean (and I'm sure this applies to ALL airbrushes) it works great for my 1/48 aircraft and 1/72 aircraft and armor modeling.  I can paint very fine lines for panel shading or camo schemes, and broader coverage for overall painting.

I just bought the Precision Aire Treo XF (2 for one at Bear Air) and what I really like about that airbrush is the 3 different sized paint bowls that are easily changed (and cleaned).  It seems to paint fine lines pretty well, but I have not really tried to get a broader spray with it yet.

I started with the Aztec and it was a great starter kit as the nozzles were very easy to change and clean.

Very helpful to have a moisture trap/pressure regulator on your compressor.  Esp being able to regulate your pressure.

Good luck!

On the bench:  Academy 1/72 B-17G 'Blue Hen Chick';  1/48 Tamiya Mustang III; Kitty Hawk 1/32 P-39.

Completed:  1/48 Tamiya P-51D Mustang - 'Show Bird', 1/32 Dragon P-51D  Flying Tigers 'What if'; 1/32 Tamiya P-51D Big Beautiful Doll

Group build:1/48 Tamiya Mustang III; 1/48 Tamiya P-51D Show Bird

I run 3 Badgers, a 200, and 2 100s.

One 100 would do the job just fine, but you how it is with these things!

I'd definitely recommend a Badger 100G with a medium head as mine covers about 99% of the painting I do, including Luftwaffe mottling.

Currently on the bench: AZ Models 1/72 Mig 17PF

I got the Iwata HP-CS because it was readily available and cheap using the Hobby Lobby 40% coupon at first. After getting and using it, I completely agree with Mucker that it is durable and easy to clean. Besides, I like the balance of the AB and smoothness of the trigger.

I have a friend selling an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. If you want, I can ask my friend to sell you it.

My friend's open to offers, but accepts only PayPal though.

Much like Phil said, you will hear many opinions based on personal use here on the forums. At the end of the day, you have to find the one that is right for you, including price, nozzle size, feed (internal mix, external mix, etc.), cleanablity, durability etc.

Personally I use the Iwata Eclispe as my workhorse and it has held up wonderfully over the last 5 or so years. Very durable and easy to clean. I also have the Sotar 20/20 which I used for fine detailed work.  While it doesn;t get used much, it has greatly helped with some tough camo schemes.

High on my "want list" but a little out of reach from the affordibilty stand point, is the Harder & Steenbeck Infinity.

From my experience, I'd recomend you take a look at the Iwata Eclipse. Again, this is based on my limited experience and I would also encourage you to weigh this against the comments you will hear from others here about the AB's that they have had success with.

Hi Joe,

You're likely to get as many different opinions on airbrushes as there are different models. Each brand has its die-hard proponents.

As far as your compressor is concerned, as long as it's in good condition, it shouldn't be an issue. As far as I know. Paasche compressors have a standard 1/4" outlet connector, so you should be able to use any brand airbrush, provided you have the correct hose adaptor.

I'm not to familiar with the other brands, but I use a Badger "Anthem" #155, with the additional fine tip & needle set up. Its easy to clean and change tips from medium to fine. Have no complaints.

Hey folks was wondering your ideas on which airbrush i should look at picking up.  I currently own a double action paasche airbrush.  I'm powering it with the Paasche air compressor.  I;m looking for something most likely double action and more importantly can use the same compressor as i can't afford to replace it.  Thoughts?  Which models? Brands?

Thanks

 Joe
