Represent black leather?
Posted by Dr. Coffee on Thursday, May 28, 2009 1:55 PM

Hi folks.

After a couple of decades away, I've been slowly gravitating towards the hobby for a couple of years now. One significant factor in this re-kindeling of my interest is the Tamya #14070 Honda CBR 1100XX Super Blackbird motocycle kit. I assembled it a few years ago for a friend (assembly only; no paints or decals) and then again a few months ago, and it looks just GOOD, even stripped down to plastic. Well, at least compared to some of the stuff I assembled as a kid.

So I decided to have yet another go, this time 'for real' with paints and decals etc to the best of my ability.

I have the plan worked out, except for the bike's seat. The paint instructions says some form of gray (don't have the plans available), and in the image in the Tamiya catalogue the bike's color scheme based on blacks and shades of bronze/gold, is is all but spoiled by the blue-gray seat. So I want to represent a black leather saddle instead. (And if somebody wonders: Yes, I have a plan for converting the kit's awful side mirrors.)

Any suggestions how to represent a black color that is distinct from the Tamya X1 and XF1 that are used elsewhere on the bike, and can be seen to represent leather? I have played with the idea to use Humbrol enamels for the seat (I'll be using Tamya and Vallejo acrylics elshwere) to set it apart, but if somebody have better suggestions...

If you are gonna work with Humbrol for the seat, try their Satin finish black for a different color and tone as opposed to the Tamiya colors.

One of the chaps in our club last week share an inprogress build which feature a real leather seat! He took an old wallet and used it to cover the seat. If you don't have one, check some of the thrift stores.

Try Testor's Rubber, # 1183... (This is the "Classic" Testor's, not Model Master, in the 1/4 oz bottles)  It looks like leather more than rubber to me... I use it for 1/48th scale flight jackets for the Brownish-black look on A-2 jackets...

You might also consider Tamiya NATO Black, which has a slight greenish-grey tinge and is not quite as stark as their X/XF-1 blacks.

I have an old leather jacket lying around somewhere - there ought to be usable patches. It would be very interesting to learn the details of what your friend did. If you just wrap the plastic seat, I would expect real leather to become far too thick for the scale.
