Tamiya white liquid surface primer + Alclad II Polished Aluminum = soaked primer
Posted by Dr. Coffee on Sunday, June 14, 2009 6:24 AM

Hi folks.

I airbrushed Tamiya White Liquid Surface Primer + Laquer Thinner (50/50 mix), let it dry for two days and airbrushed Alclad II Polished Aluminum laquer. The result was not good. The primer surface was a bit 'powdery' instead of gloss. The laquer seems to have soaked into this powdery primer instead of giving the glossy finish I hoped for.

What can be done to improve results? The Alclad II label says 'use surface primer when painting plastic models.' Maybe a gloss clear coat between primer and laquer? Or polish down the primer?

Any comments and suggestions are very welcome!

Here is a link to the AlcladII page.

http://www.alclad2.com/alclad-home.html

If you are using one of the high shine finishes your base coat should be a highly polished gloss black.  Quote from Alclad site "ALCLAD High Shine -Chrome and Polished Aluminium both require a dark glossy base. Polished Aluminium should be used over Tamiya TS-14 gloss black,or gloss black auto paint. Chrome and only chrome should be used over gloss black model enamel paint."

Any other finish should be sprayed on a very smooth finish.  A grainy primer will ruin the finish.

If you are using a primer it needs to be polished before applying the Alclad.

So... any particular reason for TS-14? Or would any acrylic gloss black (Tamiya X1 or Vallejo 70861) do?

Don't use an water based Acrylic as a base coat, the final coat of Alclad will cause the finish to crack.  TS-14 is reccomended because it is lacquer based, same as the Alclad.  You can use a gloss enamel as a base coat.

Anyone try using Mr. Surfacer 1000 as a primer for Alclad? In this case, for Alclad White Aluminum.
