Indeed, the newer CS's do have teflon packings. The older ones did not. Confirmed by Dave Monnig at Coast Airbrush. Thanks to everyone for their input!

OK thanks for the reply! I'll be calling them tomorrow...posts by others have indicated that the newer units do indeed have the teflon packings, but it would be worth a call to them to find out.

Look on Iwata's website, the parts list for the Eclipse series clearly shows a Teflon needle packing.  I own two Eclipse's, both the HP-BCS and the HP-CS and both have needle bearings.  Coast's website does not offer the teflon conversion as an option like it used to.  IIRC, the early Eclipse's did not not come with factory installed teflon seals and Coast offered it as an option.  Now that Iwata includes them, I don't think Dave does them anymore.  But I could be wrong.

As for the paints, I was looking at the example someone used to paint a 1/350 Enterprise Refit aztec patterns...he used HOK clear automotive lacquers, with pearlescent powders mixed in manually.

Those are urethanes not lacquers, unless I am wrong? These are what all the automotive and motorcycle airbrush artists use now.

Check out this motorcycle fender that Rod Fuchs painted with urethanes....he is good!:

In the linked Hobbytalk threads, he specifically says lacquers...I wonder if he means acrylic lacquers? Guess I should revisit those threads to get that clarified...

I am not sure. Someone like Ross here on the forum would know more about it than I as he is the chemist. I only did T-shirt airbrushing myself so I am not real keen on the paints and methods used by these guys using uros.

The Iwata website does not specifically say in the model details that this model has teflon anything, that's why I was wondering about this. I suppose I could call one of the website's customer service and presumably get this question answered with certainty.

Are you in the U.S? If so give Dave Monnig at Coast Airbrush in Anaheim, CA a call tomorrow and ask him. Dave knows airbrushes very, very well and he carries all the Iwatas.

Thanks, I'll do that!

You can buy a teflon needle bearing from Coast Airbrush and have them install it in an Iwata.

The lacquer will eventually damage the standard needle bearing so put the Teflon one in and you won't have to worry about it.

You mentioned pearl powders in the paint, are you sure it's lacquer?

The reason I ask is because urethanes are all the rage now with chameleon colors, irridescents, etc from companies like HOK (House of Kolor) and others like PPG. You are correct about some of these paint additives not being cheap. The flip flop (Chamaleon colors) can run $600 a quart. Wink [;)]

Thanks, I was wondering if the teflon packings could be substituted for the standard ones.

As for the paints, I was looking at the example someone used to paint a 1/350 Enterprise Refit aztec patterns...he used HOK clear automotive lacquers, with pearlescent powders mixed in manually. The result he achieved is spectacular, have a look (scroll down to post #194):

The technique he used is described here (scroll down to post #48):

Those powders run about $60 for 2oz! Guess this guy has money to burn, that project must have cost a fortune just for the paint job. It's an approach I'm considering, and I don't know if I'll be able to shell out that kind of scratch for the materials. But if I do, I'll need the appropriate AB to work with this medium. I have a Paasche VL now, and I really want to try one of the Iwata ABs in any case because they seem much less problematic for cleanup, and also seem like overall the better AB.

The HP-CS does have the teflon bearings.  Keilau is a big Iwata user.  I'm sure he'll be along to answer your questions.

Question about Iwata HP-CS Eclipse
Posted by batai37 on Sunday, June 28, 2009 3:26 AM

Greetings all,

I'm considering using lacquers on several future projects. As far as I can tell from detailed descriptions I've found, this AB doesn't have teflon needle packing. The HP-C Plus does, but is more expensive. Is this generally the case for ABs that are suitable for spraying solvent-based paints? The projects I'm going to paint may also involve the use of pearlescent powders mixed in the lacquer paint (assuming I can afford the stuff...it ain't cheap!). It seems that the higher-end ABs are the best for this type of paint medium.
