My Compressor went kaplooey
Posted by BeltFed on Monday, July 6, 2009 5:25 PM

I have been using a Badger Cyclone compressor (model 180-12) for about two years now.  I have done nothing to it but turn it on, spray, then turn it off.  Well today when I turned it on it went "eeerrrrrrrrrrr"  I looked at the back and saw the rear fan looked like it was jamming.  So i took a pait brush handle and "assisted" the rear fan.  Then YAY! it worked.  So, to see if the problem was fixed, i turned it off or on again.  No dice.  Except, it no longer goes "eerrrrrr," it now goes "clankety-clankety-clank."  In a nt shell, what the (censored) do I do?

After dinner tonight I am going to take it apart (carefully) to see if I could find the problem.

I am really P.O.ed right now...which explains the slight humor.Banged Head [banghead]

Well i have an update.  I took apart the compressor- The connecting rod the attaches to the diaphragm slipped off the crashaft.  So I re-attached it and hit it a few times with pliers to get it back on.  Worked fine for the next 10 seconds and then it fell off again.  I will call Badger tomarrow and see what they can do for me.

An suggestions you guys have are greatly appreciated.

I bet there used to be a clip ring or other retainer holding that connecting rod on. I think you're doing the right thing by calling Badger.  Please let us know how it comes out.

Yeah,  I would assume a clip ring/ retainer fell off.  Funny thing was I did not find anything siting at the bottom of the compressor.

On the bright side, now's a good opertunity to work on my figure painting skills.

Ill keep you posted!

Did your compressor come with an exploded parts diagram?  If you can find the part on the diagram that's missing, you should be able to order just that part.

There's an instruction manual with an exploded diagram here: http://www.badgerairbrush.com/PDF/180-10%20and%20180-12%20Instruction%20Book.pdf

I would be looking at parts 15 thru 17. Check if any of these is missing or broken.

Hopefully you haven't called Badger yet.  I just wanted to warn you about telling them you've taken your compressor apart given warantee issues implied.  All it takes sometimes is one slip of the lips before the company that made (and broke) your machine wipes their hands of the issue and gleefully saunters away, blaming you--the user--and saying they have no further obligation.  Just be careful what you tell them, is all.

Thank you all for your responses.  Here is where it stands:

I called Badger.  I will send my compressor to them and they will fix it, and charge me only for the missing part.  They said that my problem is a "common" problem, whcih, to me, means a design flaw.

Though it's going to be a pain not having your compressor for a while, it sounds like a good result. Thumbs Up [tup]

Well, except that he's being punished for (probably) badger's faulty engineering by losing his compressor and paying for shipping.  *Hopefully* it won't be the all-too-typical RMA scenario where a machine returns to its owner, only to break in the exact same way once again, costing the consumer buckets of money and time until they just get angry as hell and simply give up.  I've seen that happen more times on more products than I can count.

Please keep us posted and let us know if we can help.

I would tend to give Badger some slack here.  First, he's had the compressor for about two years.  Badger's warranty is one year.  Second, I believe they outsource compressors, so I don't believe it's their design.  The original poster never found the missing part.  Maybe it was never installed. From what I have read about Badger service, I bet he gets his compressor back quick and it will work like new.

Sounds awesome.  I look forward to hearing about a speedy and happy conclusion.
