advice on flat and gloss coats
Posted by Pompounette on Thursday, July 9, 2009 6:55 AM

Hi all,

I have been back in the modelling world for 6 months, and after having built up 5 models, I can see a big gap between my first Mustang and my latest P74. I have definitely improved my construction and painting skills. However, I have a serious problem when it comes to apply the gloss coat prior to the decals, and flat coat afterwards. I would need your advice on that

Gloss coat:

  • I started with the Humbrol Modelcote gloss coat, thinned with a cellulose thinner, but it looks like it never really dries. I can't prevent finger print while applying the decals
  • Klear: when using without thinning, I have orange peel effect. When thinned with Tamiya acrylic thinner, it becomes too liquid (even with few drops of thinner only). I must do something wrong as everybody on this forum seems to enjoy this product

Flat coat:

I use the Humbrol Modelcote flat coat and it's not to bad, put again, it seems to never dry completely.

Questions: so what you guys recommend me as good gloss and flat coats?

Thanks a lot!

I've never been able to obtain a smooth finish airbrushing Future (Klear) either.  However, it goes on very nice with a flat sable brush. You can see a sample here.  I airbrush Testors Dullcote over it with no problem, but I mist it on after the Future has cured for several days.
